875653 2010-04-12 21:45:00 It delivers what it says it will (for me anyway). Heard from a few people who have tried it and had no luck at all though. wratterus (105)

BigTime plan was worse than dial-up.

I'm between 100-200m from the exchange and the speeds and up-time where terrible. Most evenings it was so bad gmail would time out.

Rang them up every single night and complained, eventually got put through to a tier2 tech support dude, who explained the problems with the BigTime plan, and basically said that Telecom has no intention of fixing them any time soon.

So like a whipped dog with it's tail between it's legs, back on the Pro plan I went.

So how are/were your speeds on Pro DH? i.e. is it still a little slower than you'd like? And are you on ADSL2?

875656 2010-04-12 22:57:00 I'm on BigTime. The timeouts on Gmail and Facebook, when they do happen, are very frustrating, but they don't happen that often. It is tolerably slow, but that is the trade off for unlimited data. There is no other plan that lets me download as much for the same price.

I thought I used a lot of traffic, but I know of some people who pull over 1TB on their big time connection, but several hundred GB is not out of the ordinary (it would be for me though!)

875657 2010-04-12 23:09:00 What the heck do you guys download if you need 50GB or more let alone TBs ..

Are they freely available soap shows, I know some international people do that instead of buying foreign sky channels but I see Sky just more convenient and you save a bit off the data plans too ..

Do you download overnight every night?

I've heard people spend money on BB and so they didn't have to go to the movies, haha or buy s/w or games

Some prefer movies at 8pm, I prefer the 9am ones so when I come out it's lunch time, less people, and I have a day still to go :D

875658 2010-04-12 23:25:00 I just visited Telecom's site, don't do it much :D

Why would you put the Go LARGE plan as a $60 when you have a non-shaped $80 40GB plan  To me this is just attracting the wrong users. It's like saying going to a restaurant and you pay for a buffet less than a large single meal. I would of priced the GO LARGE plan as $100.

Most users only use it for recreational use, just cos they are greedy me thinks. There's more to life than all you can use internet. Smell the grass ...

Most of my downlaods would be TV shows, I like to download whole series for watching at my leisure. And shows like 24 which have 8 or so seasons can really chew up the GBs!!! And there are alot of shows which I download on a weekly basis - House, How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, Family Guy, Burn Notice, Lie To Me, Criminal Minds etc etc.

And before any of you start playing Mr Judgemental, yes its "piracy" but TV shows are free to air in the first place and are quite different to downloading movies and music. I see it as a grey area in the law (which isnt set out very well anyway).

875660 2010-04-12 23:31:00 I got around 300GB for Feb, haven't checked March usage so dunno...

Anyway, as long as you're using their new DNS servers you should be OK, otherwise the likes of YouTube is unbearably slow.

Torrenting is a pretty much no-go, and as mentioned use a download manager. For me I like DownThemAll for Firefox.

Per-connection speeds are also limited, but I find that I can game without worry, and there's a group of about 15 mates and they all know me for having the *best* quality connection. I know because I use a realtime ping plotter when I host games which tells me the latency from the last command sent / received from each client, so I can see as each person spikes some times. Bear in mind that all my gaming is with either NZ or Aus, I don't do WoW, mostly just WC3 / DotA.

I've also started up KiwiLAN (shameless plug) specifically to help with things like this, as Big Time connections nationally are shaped far less, and you get significantly faster per-connect speeds.

Yes, maybe once a day a single Facebook page won't load, I just click the address bar and hit Enter to reload it and it's good right away. For some reason it seems to happen most when I've got about 20 FB tabs open in Chrome :p

Anyway, for $60, I'm more than getting my moneys worth. I'd highly recommend you try it, see how it goes for a month or two for you, and if you run into issues then post here on PF1 and we can help you.
Worst-case scenario, you switch to another plan like the Pro plan, and simply restrain your downloading a little more ;-)

I'm not 100% sure, but my mum accesses her work PC from her netbook at home. Shes never had any problems with it. Although she never used it when we were on the Pro plan, shes only had her netbook since we have been on Big Time.

Not sure if that answer helped much though...
