2010-10-31 00:49:00 | Yep, she wants a new laptop. :clap Can you help with the best one to get? Thanks. I took her to DSE just to see what physical (screen) size she likes and it is 14in. She definitely does not like the large laptops and I agree that they would be too large to be easily portable. The netbooks are out - too small. So it has to be a 14 inch screen. I went to PriceSpy but could not find an ASUS (my first choice) laptop with a good price. We are looking at about $1200. Found this Toshiba (www.einfo.co.nz). What do you think? Cost $1,225 Here are the basics for the above Toshiba: 320 GB Windows 7 Home Premium DVD-Writer Processor Speed: 2.13 GHz Processor Type: Core i3 Standard Memory: 4 GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 HyperMemory - Video Memory 512 MB Camera Type - Integrated Web Cam More specs here (www.fdc.net.nz)and here (www.mytoshiba.com.au). What about "TV Out"? I am not sure if this laptop has this feature or if it has to be added. No need for high end graphics - no games, etc. But I don't like el cheapo either, so not a Celeron. Don't know anything about "Expert InfoTech". A good shop to deal with? Thanks.

Thanks for the warning! I don't mind paying a bit more to get a good dependable shop. But I don't see Ascent of Playtech on this PriceSpy page (pricespy.co.nz). Can someone recommend a good shop on that page? Thanks |

2010-10-31 01:38:00 | Expert InfoTech are one of the worst. (www.gpforums.co.nz) Good laptop, try Ascent or Playtech though. Most of the posts on that forum are from 2004 - 2007. But reading PriceSpy reviews (pricespy.co.nz), there are mixed comments - most very good but the bad experiences are BAD. So I will avoid them!

2010-10-31 06:47:00 | Here's a similar unit from Ascent (ascent.co.nz) Thanks for that. I also found it for $70 cheaper than Ascent - on Aquila Technology and NotebookCity. PriceSpy reviews for these two companies look good. One feature that is missing is the ability to burn DVD's, which seems odd for a good quality laptop, or is it common for laptops to only burn CD's? The specs as listed: [Optical Disc Drive Speed: Read: CD-ROM 24x, DVD-ROM 8x. Write: CD-R 24x, CD-RW 4x]

2010-10-31 07:14:00 | No its not uncommon for laptops to burn DVD's - it s to do with the price (generally). Cheaper laptops usually have less features or power or both - one of the lesser features can be No DVD burner, as they are more expensive drives than CD or Combo drives.
