1148605 2010-10-29 09:18:00 hi all
I'm trying to find out what the bios version is of an old computer of my neighbour. the machine does not boot even after a repair install "error loading operating system". Checked the hdd and all is ok. No internet connection at all at his(neighbours place)
Is there a little programm on a bootable cd which can read the bios version and then may do an upgrade.
thanks

1148606 2010-10-29 09:23:00 The BIOS isnt in windows. You press a key (after you reboot) to get into it (which maybe the del key or a function key). If it doesnt go at all, there's no way to flash it. Speedy Gonzales (78)
1148607 2010-10-29 09:25:00 When you say the PC wont boot -- Do you mean it wont even boot into the BIOS or just wont boot into windows ?

Normally when the PC is first powered on, there is a quick flash across the bottom of the screen as to what key to press to enter the BIOS/Setup.

Usually Del, F1 or F2, sometimes F5 depending on the board. Sometimes you have to press ESC to show it.

If the Board wont even boot into the BIOS - booting from a CD may be impossible, as the BIOS has to know to boot from the CD in the first place.

yes it does boot up(in the bios) and I have been in the bios settings a lot without success. Did a repair install(see post 1). Tried fixmbr and bootcfg.

1148609 2010-10-29 09:44:00 It should tell you what version of the BIOS is on it. Either on the post screen (press pause to see it). It may show it on the bottom of the screen.. Or it may display a series of numbers / a code. Write it down. Or under one of the menus in the BIOS. If it doesnt say it anywhere, you may to open the case. And see what the brand / model of the mobo is Speedy Gonzales (78)

The problem was that the MBR had some "leftover data on it" from a linux install. Did a "zero out" of the MBR with an UBCD and the original OS installed without a problem.
Thanks for any hints/help.:D
