Alcatel-Lucent has found a way to move data at 300Mbps over two copper lines, the company said on Wednesday . However, so far it is only in a lab environment -- real products and services won't show up until next year .

Researchers at the company's Bell Labs demonstrated the 300Mbps technology over a distance of 400 meters using VDSL2 (Very high bitrate Digital Subscriber Line), according to Stefaan Vanhastel, director of product marketing at Alcatel-Lucent Wireline Networks . The test showed that it can also do 100Mbps over a distance of 1,000 meters, he said .

On its own VDSL2 tops out at about 100Mbps over a distance of 400 meters, so to get to three times that capacity Alcatel-Lucent combines a number of different technologies . Alcatel-Lucent's first trick is to use two copper pairs at the same time, a technology called bonding . Next Alcatel-Lucent uses a feature it has developed called Phantom Mode to create a third virtual copper pair that sends data over a combination of the two physical ones .

879058 2010-04-22 08:58:00 Right - so every household needs to get two phone lines. Also, they make no mention of upload speeds.

It certainly is a great development though, which will help in the greater scheme of things.

879059 2010-04-22 09:06:00 FTTH?
Nazi party election bribe.
Don't need it, don't want it.
Won't make a blind bit of difference.
Except you'll end up paying more for less.
As always:(

879060 2010-04-22 09:12:00 And we have two dig up all the current copper and put in two more wires? Sweep (90)

Why do we have to dig it up twice?

879062 2010-04-22 10:24:00 OK Roddy equivalent. The first "two" should have been "to".

I had to read your comment twice before I think I've twigged maybe.

They don't mention download speeds either. It's 300Mbps up or down, just like a fibre connection is 100mbps up and down

Mainstream DSL connections are always faster in one direction than the other - due to the fact that they want to minimise the hardware cost to the end user. VDSL which is available now is very fast, but still asynchronous - you get fantastic download speeds, but not so flash upload speeds. Don't get me wrong - this is great news - but it's still copper technology.
