877634 2010-04-17 22:18:00 This is odd ------------------ :waughh:

After that JAVA dump by Firefox, now I cannot access the files in my WMP11 again!

I rolled back to WMP9 and that's not OK . It runs OK, but I don't like the GUI of WMP9 .

So I tried to upgrade to WMP10 but I get a card telling me that WMP10 won't work on my XP-Pro now when it USED TO!

Who's messing with whom here? :yuck:

877635 2010-04-17 23:10:00 Mine runs fine although I don't normally use it I use VLC or media player classic gary67 (56)
877636 2010-04-17 23:16:00 I normally disable WMP in any MS OS along with Messenger, Outlook and IE. (Do people actually use those things? If so, I admire their fortitude.) R2x1 (4628)
877637 2010-04-17 23:35:00 WMP11 works fine here.

(R2x1: yes, VLC sometimes has problems playing WMV files.)

Hmmmm . But I LIKE the GUI .

It's gonna hurt if I have to lose all the album pixs and info that it has .

I've had issues with WMP before too . It seems when you hit 14,000-plus MP3s, it gets a little nuts-o . and I'm there now so it may not be a JAVA coincidence that it pooped out now .

But why won't WMP10 be allowed back in? I can go from 11 to 9 and back to 11, but it skips 10 all together . Well - I can't really get 11 back as it still loses all the files .

877639 2010-04-17 23:45:00 What happens when you try and access the files?? An error comes up? WMP crashes? I doubt Java would cause it Speedy Gonzales (78)

Sure, it has it's problems but if you hang in there, you learn to overcome them and then WMP 11 is a great little player . I have found many of the problems can be overcome by a little work and a free download called MP3 Tag ( . mp3tag . de/en/download . html" target="_blank">www . mp3tag . de) . Using this and filling out the information fields can be hard work, do a little each day . Embed the album art and you are in business, looks great on your MP3 player . Alternately, you can use Advanced Tag Editor within WMP 11 .

Using one location for your music helps too .

Now getting to your problem Surfer Joe . Can't help with WMP 9 or 10 but your problem with WMP 11 is a corrupted database . Here's how to fix it .

1 . Exit WMP . Goto CONTROL PANEL> ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS>SERVICES

2 . Turn off any Service with Windows Media Player in it's name .

3 . Goto RUN - type or copy and paste the following line:

%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Player\

4 . Create a folder named OLD in the new window .

5 . Drag and drop the existing files into the new folder . Leave ART CACHE . Close Window .

6 . Restart any SERVICES you turned off .

7 . Open WMP 11 . Goto LIBRARY, ADD TO LIBRARY .

8 . Check your MONITORED FOLDERS . Tick the ADD FILES PREVIOUSLY DELETED FROM LIBRARY .

9 . Click OK . Let WMP search for music files .

10 . Done!!

I C/P'd and printed the instructions out . It looks like it's NOT Linux so I may get it to work for me .

Thanks . . . . .

The files are there OK . I can play them in any other player I have - but I like WMP11 .

Anyway - when I reload WMP11, all it does is sits there and hums . It goes nowhere and reports that there are no files associated with it that it can find .

I have all my MP3s in a 'special' place to keep them safe unlike the LAST time I went through this and Linux sanitized my all my harddrives -

Silly question, have you directed the clean install of wmp to your safe location of your mp3's?
