| 1149041 | 2010-11-03 18:17:00 | It was, the build quality has improved a hell of a lot last couple of years, Dells are ok now . Not top end thou . Colours . www2 . hp . com/campaign/designbyhp/nz/en/freeskins . html" target="_blank">h20424 . www2 . hp . com Those HP skins are fantastic but the trouble is I'd have to put in on a HP laptop . LOL . Thanks for comment about Dell . It is a possibility . I am taking SWMBO to Noel Leemings soon for her to look at a couple of Toshibas, and a stunningly beautiful blue Sony Vaio (yeah I know, over priced by nearly $500) . I've never had any problems with Expert Info Tech . Horses for courses I guess :) You are lucky . There are some awful reviews on PriceSpy (along with others who praise Expert Info Tech) . I won't take the chance . You will get something with a better processor if you are willing to pay a bit more . At the price range you are talking something's gotta give . Researching the processor in that Toshiba, I found that it was specific to the 14in screen laptops and aimed at power saving, not CPU grunt . I don't know what we will purchase - if it was up to SWMBO it will be any laptop that is a beautiful colour and a nice manageable size (i . e . not large and not a netbook), and for me it would be minimum 4Gb RAM with a decent graphics unit and not a wimpy CPU - all for a bargain price of course, LOL . Paint it Purple!!! You got it . Purple is her favourite colour . It could ANY sort of laptop but if it had a beautiful purple finish, at any price, she would get it . So anyhow what we are up to is a visit to Noel Leemings and a possibility of getting a Dell unless PriceSpy or DSE throws a bargain at us . |

| 1149042 | 2010-11-04 07:54:00 | Update... She has changed her mind.  Now says a 15.5 in screen is OK. Took her to Noel Leemings this afternoon and she kept going back to the blue Sony Vaio. It is her choice and she can get whatever - I just advise and make sure she doesn't get ACER, or low specs. In the end I said is an extra $450 worth the blue colour compared to the sliver/black Toshiba? She thought about it... and said no, it is not worth it. So now the pick of NL's is a Toshiba: i3, 512 dedicated graphics, 500G, $1099, Win7 64 bit I believe; only 2G RAM but I can add some later if needed. BTW the sales woman at NL actually was knowledgeable about the specs and was helpful. Or there is the Dell at about the same price with 4G RAM, red, and a basic no-frills type of MS Office. What do you think? Any better options? |

| 1149043 | 2010-11-04 09:05:00 | Personally I would go for the Toshiba and upgrade it if wanting to. basic no-frills type of MS Office The manufactures "should" be installing Microsoft Office Starter edition Free. Its basically a cut down version of Word / Excel with a MS advertising on the Right hand side. It has the option to upgrade to a full paid featured versions of MS Office. Any OEM system builder can get it, (and I mean real OEM builders, not home users buying OEM parts), you CANT buy it in the shops, you usually have to be registered with MS as a system Builder or meet other requirements. You HAVE to agree to a few things before you are allowed to download it. I put it on all the New PC's I build unless other wise instructed not to (meaning as per the agreement & how its presented/ marketed), usually in the case of the person wanting a full version. Its free to the customer, but the OEM builders have to pay for it, next to nothing. |

| 1149044 | 2010-11-04 18:21:00 | Thanks for the explanation wainui. If the Starter edition is not good enough or annoying with the advertising, I will put on Open Office Org. A Toshiba is my preference and it will probably be the one at NL's unless PriceSpy has a better price from a dependable supplier. At least we will get Fly Buys at NL's. |
