878547 2010-04-21 16:26:00 The 9V battery idea is OK - for a short while .

What chance does a small 'transistor radio' battery have in comparison to a legacy-type 12V - multi hundred-AMP lead/acid battery?

If you are worried about the huge battery under the hood going flat, then there's no way in purgatory that a measly 9V battery is gonna hold up for more than a few minutes, hours or even a day .

The Memory Savers . toolweb . com/pics/KAS295A . jpg" target="_blank">www . toolweb . com are just that - a saver for a quick service in a shop or garage to allow replacing the vehicle battery without dumping all the memory in everything that has one .

Actually, we never used them as they are questionable anyway - 9V is not equivalent to 12+V and any slight discharge (inadvertently opening a door or hitting the brake pedal/brake lights) would dump the memory anyway - the 9V battery wasn't capable of much and was running on the ratty edge trying to hold it's own with just the ECM .

We always used a gell-cell starting battery that had much higher amp/hours than a 9V with the appropriate connectors .

If a battery dies in less than 2 months of non-use, then there's something wrong with the battery if there are no lights running somewhere . The ECM parasitic drain is almost infinitesimally small .

I helped clear a defunct dealer's new and used car lot when he got eaten up by The Obama Federal Automobile & Screen Door Company and there were vehicles there that had been parked for over nine months - and 100% of them started on first crank .

Sorry - ALL vehicles from Japan are so equipped lately - maybe a little more or less on a country-by-country basis, but frankly it's not good business to make lesser quality or endowed vehicles for export to countries that don't care for the 'devices' . It's too much inventory and dualist (triplists? quadruplist?) model stocking to keep too many different setups in the factory assembly line .

I cannot speak of all the Euro-boxes however: They are still coal-fired and any semblance of a computer is prolly an abacus anyway . Not much chance of dumping the RAM or the ROM with that, now is there? Batteries too? I think not! The Lucas "Armstrong Electric Starter" is still in vogue . (Your arm gets strong using the crank . )

For me it is. Don't know about anyone else who has the same one. You can even do it with the TV off.

Then again, it's a Panasonic, not a Samsung...
