1148660 2010-10-30 19:46:00 Comodo firewall.

The made the two DNS addresses the same as my desktop.

1148661 2010-10-30 19:49:00 Could be comodo stopping something then. Configure it or disable it. Then see if it gets on the net Speedy Gonzales (78)
1148662 2010-10-30 22:15:00 No luck. Disabled Comodo. Rebooted, disabled/enabled LAN, rebooted, Automatic IP and DNS settings, rebooted... did various things like this.... also of course tried entering an IP address manually (as in one of the posts above). No change - still no internet connection.

To clarify/repeat: The IP address is different than the desktop but all other settings (Gateway, DNS) are the same as my desktop.

Not sure what to do now. The light on the modem/router is still lit up, and the LAN icon on the laptop still indicates a connection. It is an old laptop, around 8 years old. Never had a problem with it but is it possible there is a component failure? If it is a hardware fault would this show up in Device Manager or somewhere else? Last weekend I nearly bought SWMBO a new laptop - a Toshiba with great specs, from Norman Ross - a few days ago SWMBO agreed that it is time for her to get a new laptop so if I cannot get this old laptop on the internet it will speed up the purchase of a new one, but it will tick me off that I cannot figure out what is wrong. Any other ideas?

1148663 2010-10-30 22:18:00 Does the LED on the laptop NIC light up at all? If the NIC is dead, it may disappear from device manager. Or say it has a prob. The laptop is plugged into the router right, youre not using a xover?

So for the 4th-5th time WHAT did you put in for the DNS server ips (on yours)? Take a snapshot / pic of whats under her LAN properties / TCP/IP entry. And post it here. Cut out whatever you dont want us to see

1148664 2010-10-30 22:36:00 What is a NIC light? If you mean the little windows icon showing the LAN in the Sys Tray, there is virtually no indication of activity, only a brief flash when making a change to the LAN settings and clicking OK.

Speedy I did not give you the DNS settings because I thought there was no need - it is the same as on the desktop and I have not changed anything on the desktop. But here they are:
Preferred DNS server: 202.180.64.10
Alternate DNS server: 202.180.64.11
...and...
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (on both laptop and desktop)

1148665 2010-10-30 22:41:00 NIC - network adapter = What the ethernet cable is plugged into

Those ips belongs to callplus. Are you with callplus business / mobile?
Speedy Gonzales (78)
1148666 2010-10-30 22:50:00 Not with callplus. Slingshot.

Well, I never noticed any LED for the NIC / cable. There is no LED on the back of the laptop where the cable plugs into, and not LED on the keyboard part of the laptop.

1148667 2010-10-30 22:56:00 Hmm looks like theyre one of the same - those DNS server ips

So thats all good

Reboot the laptop then press F8 select safe mode / networking. We'll see if that gets it on the net. If that works there maybe something stopping it in normal windows

Also is this a work laptop?? If it is, does it use a proxy?

1148668 2010-10-30 23:17:00 Went into Safe Mode, but still no internet. Strommer (42)
1148669 2010-10-30 23:24:00 Would it do any good to do a System Restore? Strommer (42)
