1149021 2010-10-31 07:35:00 No its not uncommon for laptops to burn DVD's - it s to do with the price (generally).

Cheaper laptops usually have less features or power or both - one of the lesser features can be No DVD burner, as they are more expensive drives than CD or Combo drives.

Thanks for the info. I would like a DVD burner, so am looking at alternative laptops. Several questions:

HDMI - Is this for plugging the laptop into a HD screen (television)?

e-SATA - For faster transfer of data with an external hard drive?

VGA Out (ext monitor) - OK, I see it is for an external monitor but does this also enable the laptop to connect to a (non high def) television screen?

Would this Toshiba (justlaptops.net.nz) be too limited (Centrino)? It is cheap, only $899. Not sure if it can burn DVD's though - it just states "DVD SuperMulti Double/Dual Layer". It is WinXP but this is not a worry for me.

Another Toshiba here (justlaptops.net.nz). $999, with 9 hour battery! May not have an optical drive though.

1149022 2010-10-31 09:46:00 HDMI, yes (Can also convert back to DVI/VGA (I thinK)).
E-Sata, yes
VGA, yes (but not sure about CRT tvs if that's what you meant, may be able to convert)

All the Toshibas youve looked at, have DVD burners, would be highly unlikely not to have (this is,
"DVD SuperMulti Double/Dual Layer". It is XP a cd/dvd/+r/-r/rw/ram and everything else capable, but XP doesn't burn dvds itself/natively but will with third-party software).

Personally, I would go for the first one you looked at, not many compromises on that one.

To change the subject, how did you get on with your bro-in-laws firefox/toolbars problem?

1149023 2010-10-31 11:56:00 HDMI is convertible to DVI, although hdmi to vga i'm not sure about.

VGA connections don't directly allow connections to old CRT tv's, you'll need a converter to display the image on a tv. Many lcd's will have a pc input though. (vga or dvi)

If a laptop has an s-video out, you can connect it to a decent tv and have it work. Although given the quality of crt pictures in displaying pc images, I'd not bother and simply opt for an LCD.

1149024 2010-10-31 18:16:00 Thanks for the info about VGA, HDMI, etc.

feersumendjinn, as I said in my post on the other thread, it may be awhile before I can get back to my bro-in-law regarding FF.

feersumendjinn wrote: "All the Toshibas youve looked at, have DVD burners, would be highly unlikely not to have..." I know, it does seem unlikely my first choice did not have a DVD burner, but it only listed CD's in the burn specs, not DVD's.

[Post #11] above - are Centrino laptops, and the other cheapie listed there any good?

One of the Toshiba's I sold a month back, only came with a Combo drive, could read/write CD's, Play DVD. NO burner for DVD.

Just been looking at the system Spec's for the Toshiba's linked - according to every review, and system Spec, the T135D has NO Optical drive at all.

The Other Link Toshiba Tecra M5, Thats Questionable.

The site doesn't really say what model it is apart from Toshiba Tecra M5 Business Machine . There are ( or were) several models in that range all with different spec's, some have DVD writers some only have Combo Drives.

Both are now discontinued items from Toshiba, so getting any spec's from them is a bit harder.

Strommer - My suggestion - find one you like, then call the shop if not 100% sure and ask.

Its your money and people giving out possible wrong information is no good.

Of course, of course. That is what I do, but I find most all PF1 comments helpful in some way. Opinions and preferences put forward by a PF1ers, whether I agree with them or not, will usually lead me to making a more informed choice. To be honest, even when there are no comments at all, merely by me posting the question can focus my mind so that I get the answer myself.

Anyhow at the moment I am putting the laptop search on hold for a few days or a week. SWMBO is in no big hurry and (amazingly) managed to use webmail on my desktop last night. I will wait to see what deals appear, even at places like DSE...
