878667 2010-04-20 23:50:00 it is weirdly written, "stepped around the barriers" wtf was she walking at the time?? Gobe1 (6290)
878668 2010-04-20 23:52:00 At least I'll be safe, I only use a nokia music player not an ipod. psycik (12851)

878670 2010-04-20 23:55:00 The train driver does not like cyclists so jumped the tracks on purpose? Sweep (90)
878671 2010-04-20 23:58:00 If it happened where I think it did (corner Mataphihi Rd and Maunganui Rd - opposite Bayfair), there are pedestrian fences that 'guide' you through the crossing (ironically to stop people walking straight out onto the railway lines!), so I imagine she may have been walking her bike and paying no attention to surroundings...

Perhaps it would have been safer to have been riding on the road??? At least there are barriers that come down across the road...

878672 2010-04-21 00:05:00 You just have to be careful and use your eyes a lot more. Besides, if you can't hear anything around you, you have the volume too loud and you'll be giving yourself ear damage. Agent_24 (57)
878673 2010-04-21 00:34:00 Why would you have an MP3 player on while cycling?

Had she not been using the MP3 player then she would still be alive.

878674 2010-04-21 01:34:00 Make as much fun as you like about this tragic event. No one deserves to lose their life in such an awful way, regardless of whether it was their fault or not. The 55 year old woman was the wife of my wife's workmate. Not nice. Have respect please. Jester (13)

I use an MP3 player while cycling to work in the countryside. Relieves the boredom of the trip. I don't have the volume so loud that I can't hear traffic approaching from behind. The earplugs allow background noise to come through just fine. Don't jump to conclusions about the situation. Who knows how loud she had the volume up? If she ignored the visual clues about a train approaching, perhaps she would have ignored audio clues as well, irrespective of using an ipod.

The same argument could be used for pedestrians using an MP3 player while crossing roads.
