1148800 2010-10-30 04:08:00 My brother-in-law has a Win7 laptop. I set up Firefox on it several months ago and all was OK but he called me over today as some sort of malware hijacked his start page. After fiddling a bit (CCleaner, MSE scan, uninstall-reinstall FF) I managed to get rid of the malware but now (and while the malware was on it) there are no toolbars on FF.

There is no URL address bar, no Google search bar, no Navigation / Menu Bookmards... nothing.... and no matter where I right click, or left click, I cannot bring up the FF Option to Customize, or any other option to get the missing items back to the top of FF.

Any ideas on how to restore FF to the usual form? I did uninstall and reinstall FF but that did not solve the problem. FF does open with two tabs: Stuff.co.nz and MetService Weather - that is what my bro-in-law wants so that is OK but there is no way to add a URL or to do a normal Google search.

1148801 2010-10-30 04:14:00 Try uninstalling it again then delete its folders as well. (in program files (x86) if its 64 bit, users/username/appdata (local/roaming - the folders are called mozilla). If youre using something else (like thunderbird), go into the mozilla folder then delete the firefox folder (after you uninstall it)

You may have to show all files to see the rest of the files

Hmm. CCleaner isn't an antimalware program.
MSSE is antivirus.
You need to add two of:
Spybot
Malware Bytes
Superantispyware
to that list.

As for FF, reinstall it after it's clean. You could aslo run Hijackthis and check nothing suspect is left lurking too.

1148805 2010-10-30 09:31:00 Easy, I fixed one last night that had same problem

start Firefox in Safe Mode by clicking Start, selecting Run (or use the Start Search box in Windows 7 and Vista) and then entering the following in the text field:

firefox -safe-mode

from there you can disable all addons toolbars etc straight forward,.

OK that makes sense and will do if nothing else works - thanks . I did set up Thunderbird on his laptop . Fairly sure it is not 64 bit .

BTW my bro in law is a real noob with computers and had no idea of what to buy so when he told me he *finally* bought one (very first PC in the household) I cringed thinking he got a el cr*ppo ACER but was relieved to see he has a Toshiba with decent specs .

If it was that simple I wouldn't be here . Read my fist post again .

Yeah OK  I knew I was going to get corrected when I wrote that  , really . Well, my bro-in-law said his laptop was sluggish so I figured CCleaner would not be a bad idea; also installed Auslogics defragger . Eventually I will get Spybot and Malware Bytes or Superantispyware on his laptop but he and his laptop are not easily accessible even though he lives nearby up the street . He is a good guy but quite careful and conservative and cannot take in too much that is new while learning computer stuff - it is a steep learning curve for him (although he is doing very well I must say) .

Anyhow . . . yes, I will run anti malware, Hijack This, etc . - if necessary .

Try pressing ALT on your keyboard to bring up the Menu bar, if that works then right-click on that to see/turn on the rest .

Good idea . Will try .

OK but there are no addons or toolbars . The trouble is that there is NOTHING (see my first post) .

Thanks everyone for your suggestions . I am not sure when I can get back to his laptop but when I do, I will come back here with the results .
