1148686 2010-10-29 23:43:00 Hi there all. I'm trying to set up VPN on an ipstar ipx5100me satellite modem.
Attached are two pages I think are relevant. networking and GRE tunnel

Attached are two pages I think are relevant. networking and GRE tunnelI assume you realise that GRE is simply an encapsulation protocol? It doesn't provide any kind of encryption.

What are your requirements for this VPN link, and what are you terminating it on at the other end?

Note that Pctek's points about speed issues are valid, and will potentially cause you a few issues with TCP connections being routed over the VPN.

1148689 2010-10-30 06:03:00 Thanks for the reply's. My sister-in-law is a school teacher and was hoping to be able to connect to the school VPN so she didn't have to go into town to do reports etc. Upload is about 170 but it is the latency that could be the trouble but nothing ventured nothing gained. I have got the wireless router working with it but am not sure about the ipstar satellite.
Her laptop is already setup as she uses that already at school.

1148690 2010-10-30 10:55:00 Can you explain what the requirements are for the school VPN? It's *very* unlikely to be plain GRE; there will almost certainly be some form of encryption and authentication there too. Any network admin who sets up an internet-facing VPN into a private network using plain GRE deserves to lose their job pronto.

Note that you will probably *not* be able to terminate the VPN connection on the satellite modem - this will only work if the modem supports whatever VPN system the school uses (unlikely), *and* the school routes your local subnet through this link (very, very unlikely). In almost all cases, it makes far more sense to terminate the VPN on the laptop rather than on the modem.

If you don't care about speed, then it should work fine over a satellite connection - just don't expect it to be as fast as non-VPN traffic.

1148691 2010-10-30 20:18:00 Thanks Erayd. The GRE may be a complete blind alley it is just that with the wireless router I allowed two settings and it passed through it. Can't remember them exactly but the ipstar doesn't name those two and because of tunnelling I thought may be GRE had something to do with it. It is quite a different beast, the ipstar.
I don't truly know yet the Schools requirements in regard to VPN as all I thought I had to do is let it pass through.
Does one of the network setting need to be enabled on the ipstar?
I have never had anything to do with VPN before so it is a bit of a learning curve.

1148692 2010-10-31 00:52:00 PPTP uses GRE as a transport - perhaps you're thinking of GRE passthrough? This is required for PPTP to work properly.

PPTP is built into Windows, and the connections look very much like a dialup link.

The only setting you might need to change on the ipstar modem is to enable GRE passthrough, but you'll only need to do this if it's not already enabled - many routers enable it by default.

Thanks again. When I get out there again I will try enabling the External GRE Tunnel which is disabled and the other one if that doesn't work.
Her's is a MAC laptop which I am not too familiar with but thought I wouldn't need to touch it.

1148694 2010-10-31 02:16:00 You won't need to touch the laptop. Hopefully you won't need to change anything on the modem either - give it a shot and see. Don't mess with anything unless it doesn't work.

External GRE tunnel will almost certainly *not* be what you're after - that's normally used by the ISP connection, and is nothing to do with VPN passthrough.

There is an internal GRE tunnel which is disabled as well.
It didn't work before and that is why I logged(after some difficulty getting the right log on) on to the ipstar to see what settings were there. I had been hoping after setting the wireless router all was going to work. It is always good having a new learning experience although I get a lot of that with Linux and trying out different things there.
Thanks very much for your help.:thanks
