1148640 2010-10-29 20:45:00 The wireless internet connection for SWMBO's laptop quit working so I reconnected the cable from the ADSL2 modem. The cable-laptop connection always worked prior to going wireless but not now.

The LED on the modem indicates a connection and the WinXP "Local Area Connection Status" shows a speed of 100 Mbps but virtually no "Activity" of packet transfer.

I tried right clicking the "Local Area Connection" icon (System Tray) > Repair, and let the repair process complete but this did not work. Also tried rebooting the laptop.

What else can I do to get an internet connection?

1148641 2010-10-29 21:08:00 Give it an ip under the LAN properties / TCP/IP entry. Has it been scanned for malware since neither work? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1148642 2010-10-29 21:16:00 Instead of doing a repair of the LAN connection select disable and then go back and select enable.

Repair the winsock files by going to command prompt and typing:
netsh winsock reset catalog press enter and restart computer

1148643 2010-10-29 21:27:00 Or you could try downloading winsock fix gary67 (56)

OK, did "disable - enable" and rebooted but no go.
Also did command prompt thing but no go.

Or you could try downloading winsock fix

Will do if necessary but wouldn't Safari's command prompt suggestion do the same?

Speedy, not sure what IP to give it but you may be on to something here as maybe the IP was changed when my friend set up the wireless on the laptop.

Have not yet scanned for malware but would be surprised if this is the problem as the laptop rarely goes on the internet via a browser and emails are carefully screened. However I will try this if all else is a no go.

1148645 2010-10-29 21:44:00 Give it an ip under the LAN properties / TCP/IP entry .

Just checked . It does in fact have an IP of 168 . 192 . 0 . 2

1148646 2010-10-29 21:49:00 Change it to an ip (within the router's valid ip range). I've never heard of an ip starting with 168. Its usually 10.1.x.x, 192.168.x.x. Or other.

The LAN / wired ip shouldnt change if you use wireless. They've got different settings. Whats the modem/router? Whats under DNS servers under the LAN properties / TCP/IP entry? There should be something here, if you've given it an ip

1148647 2010-10-29 21:50:00 Change it to an ip (within the router's valid ip range). I dont think that ip is one of them. The LAN / wired ip shouldnt change if you use wireless. They've got different settings

How do I find an IP "within the router's valid ip range"?

1148648 2010-10-29 21:55:00 Whats the brand / model of the modem/router? And what ip do you type to login to it? This should be under gateway under TCP/IP. If you're connected to the same modem/router, (and obviously you're here, so it works), look under TCP/IP on yours. Speedy Gonzales (78)
1148649 2010-10-29 22:01:00 Just checked. It does in fact have an IP of 168.192.0.2

Just change it to obtain IP and DNS automatically
