2010-11-02 21:11:00 | Hi all, I would like to build a web forum\chat room\message board for our WAN so our staff can get some discussion groups going. I would like to be able to have topic\category subscriptions and exclusive areas as well. I have never done this before and would like some ideas, are there free packages\open source?, we do have sharepoint licensing, can we use that? Any help greatly appreciated

Another alternative if you can't be bothered is a guy I know that will build it for you for a flat rate (no hidden costs) PM me if you want more info on that. Here is a example, baring in mind that most of this site is closed to you. oufholo.net |

2010-11-02 22:03:00 | Hi guys, while the forum will eventually be on an internal network it will probably be on a DMZ for awhile. The firm is currently designing a new WAN to increase sites from 4 to 14!, so not everyone on the network right now. I like to look of oufholo.net, if a little dark, but really, the feel of Pressf1 is good!

2010-11-02 23:30:00 | phpBB is piss easy to setup, you could do it in under 2 minutes with your eyes closed, then it's just a matter of fluffing around with permissions to suit your specific wants / needs. Permissions are what always takes the longest. phpBB is nice coz it's so widely used there's some slick themes (Styles) out there too :) www.phpbb.com Select from the drop-down menu up the top

2010-11-02 23:52:00 | x3 for phpBB. Just grab any standard LAMP (you don't even need the L) server, biff it on, play with the themes, permissions, etc. Does pretty much everything that vBulletin does (which is what PressF1 uses). Users can have subscribed threads, receive email alerts when people reply to them, etc etc. If you're after a live chat section, throw an IRC daemon on the server (I recommend InspIRCd for windows). The only really hard thing with an IRC server is the initial config. Takes up a bit of time, but its well worth it. Since it's just for an intranet, you don't need to set up many modules, chanmodes, IRCops, bans, etc etc. After that, just get a copy of pjRIC (java applet IRC client) for the users to, well, use.
