| 1149797 | 2010-11-02 17:38:00 | Since living here I have had 4 different modems plugged in. After a while our line starts to get static, varying from super noisy to a bit crackly. Husband did tests and insists the modem plugged into the jackpoint (not the jackpoint itself) here is what causes it. I notice once the noise starts the modem starts to drop connection, not find the page - usually does after a refresh a few times, stuff like that. I can't and don't believe I have had 4 faulty modems - 2 of which were brand new. All 4 were different brands too. 1 is my trusty old Billion I've had for ages and use as a test modem, doesn't have issues anywhere else. But husband says it's the modem. IT may become irrelevant after we move? Or not? What do you think? After I change a modem the problems vanish for a while. But they come back. |

| 1149800 | 2010-11-02 18:45:00 | Maybe a corroded or intermittently faulty jackpoint, especially if on an outside wall. They are cheap to replace. Edit: If phone jack points are daisy chained, it may not neccessarily be the one that the modem is plugged into that can cause the problem. |

What if one of the "faulty" modems is plugged in after a "good" one is removed ?Could it be weather related ? ie moisture getting in somewhere. It defiantly points towards a filter problem although how it rights itself if a new modem is plugged in almost rules this out as well. One logical answer could be possibly a faulty lappy or another PC being used on another jack point on the network setting of the reaction. |

Depends on the brands and things, and especially as it's heating up coming into summer, it's still possible it's the routers. What make / model are they all? Also, make sure they're not situated in direct sunlight, or close to the window in a steaming hot room for example. I'd go with what CYaBro said, plus it can't hurt to find out so you can be nice and let the landlords / new tenants know yeah? |

There are 3 in use. 1 has an old style phone plugged in, having this disconnected makes no difference. tHE OTHER ONE HAS THE MAIN PHONE IN IT. dISCONNECTING THIS MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. (caps lock Grr) Then theres the modem - no filter, filters in the other 2 jackpoints, swapped them out, no difference. So husband ran round testing bits and said it's the modem. You unplug it and the static stops. BUT, I've had the Billion in it, the current Netgear - new, an ASUS model, which I sold and was just fine with other user, and another Dynalink, I sold that too, no problems. I tested the ASUS at my sons place and it was fine. I've had the billion for ages, its ADSL1, the others are/were adsl2+. I change a modem and the problem goes away, but a few weeks later comes back. It re-appeared on Monday I think. Static came back badly yesterday. Husband unplugged it. It's not in the sun, although all of them do get hot. In the same power multi-box is my PC and my monitor. None of which have any problems. I bought new filters last time too and changed them. Then changed them back. As husband used to work for Telecom way back when, we argue about this. He knows nothing about broadband or modems, but I guess he can test a jackpoint although he wasn't a linesman...... |

I have had it plugged in but it never stays for more than a day or two as its ADSL 1. So I guess if the jackpoint? or power? is killing the modems then I wouldn't know with this one. I've swapped it for brand new ones each time, then afterb a while I get the same problem back. The billion hasn't had an issue but then like I said, I swap modems and its fine for a while, the billion is never connected long enough to tell. |

But they come back. 4 Modems all doing the same thing --- Unlikely Filters or Lines causing Problems = Possible. Change PC's or plug in a laptop only - there may be something starting to go stupid in the Computer, causing problems. |
