I own DVD of both films and they're brilliant, it is easy to forget how one band was responsible for changing so much in such a short period of time, they reminded people they didn't need to be able to play an extended guitar solo to be in a band and as a result we got other great bands like The Clash and the whole punk/new wave scene. | Twelvevolts (5457) | ||

Sadly the very birthplace of Metal gave so much they lost touch of what real music is and have since wallowed in horrible worthless crap for decades. Metal didn't kill punk, It just shredded an extended guitar solo over its pathetic corpse. |

Funnily enough the Malcolm McLaren view was that it was a fashion, but fashion alone couldn't lead to great bands that followed like The Clash. Punk led to new wave which led to the alternative movement which is going as strong today as it ever was. In fact the last five years have been as good a time for music as I can recall. Metal may have stagnated because it has no where to go that is different. But each to their own, I mean there are people who like rap so we know there are all different tastes out there. |

The "alternative" term is just a reaction to the commercialisation of music and has always existed in one form or another, and it in itself has been used as a marketing tool, with the marketing people adapting it to sell to the masses. The Sex Pistols are a prime example, but so is other watered down worthless pap like Nirvana and Poison. It happens with each generation of music. |

I was reading the other day that Elvis Costello (Declan McManus) worked away for years to try and break into the music industry (as did many others). Suddenly along came the new wave and a quick change of clothes later, and suddenly he was huge. His first album was backed by Clover who were a country band, but then it really took off when he got The Attractions behind him. These artists all had talent but might never have broken through without what happened around 1976/1977 with punk rock. Malcolm McLaren certainly played a part in that change and guys like Elvis Costello have gone on to have long and successful careers. |
