1149827 2010-11-03 07:39:00 Bit drastic - but is there anywhere you can pick up the PC, modem and take to another place that is known to work OK. If there and it still does it, then its either real bad luck with Modems or the PC somewhere.

If its all OK at another location, then it has to be something at the house.

Out of interest, has it just started doing this -- If so whats changed about the place / area / Street ?

While the warmer weather can affect modems - All 4 at once ????

1149828 2010-11-03 19:19:00 ok it does sound like a faulty line to me ( from back here in the comfort of home so no way to be sure ).

Bear in mind that the phone is much more tolerant to faults and can work perfectly on a line thats no good for broadband. Faults on the line are not always obvious to normal testing - you can have two perfectly good wires end to end and still be "faulty" the type of wire can be as much of a problem as anything.

It could also be an imbalance problem, is the overhead line for example made up of twisted pairs or the older 049 lead in which was just 4 wires in a sheath and not good for modern digital signals.

odds are when you move this all goes away, 4 faulty modems is unlikely and while the pc can cause network problems it is also unlikely that it can affect the dsl side of things.

I do have a background in the industry so I'm not making this stuff up :)

Yup, absolutely! I've had to replace 4 in the last two weeks... And I'm not even really doing IT "on-the-side" anymore, so that's just immediate friends / family etc

1149830 2010-11-03 20:20:00 OK. We moved in and all was well. Original modem, PC etc.
Then I got switched to Vodafones Red network.
Not long after I find the modem won't resolve DNs - an incompatibilty apparently. This is the super shot version of that saga.
Then it starts to drop connection, real briefly to start, then getting worse, then we get static on the line.

Changed modesm, all OK. Then it starts again after a few weeks.

Change modems again and then it starts again.

Husband used to both install and maintain telephone exchanges so he isn't totally ignorant either.
he absolutely insists the line is clear. He said there is nothing on it, but when we had the static, he tested it with the modem in and there was - I forget the wording - whatever across the line. Remove modem, static gone, line clear.

However last night I played around. We have an old dial phone too, always worked but we used it mainly for the ring. Andyway he went to that and listened while I unplugged things, funny, I unplugged the modem and he said there was static. At that point nothing was in except this phone.
So I removed that phone - didn't really help though - it doesn't entirely seem to matter what I plug in or not. I swapped all the filters again too.

And interestingly, that dial phone now will not cut dial tone when you dial on it. It used to on telecoms equipment. Can't say I tested it on Vodafones, as I say, we don't dial with it, just have it for it's ring.

Andway, unplugged verything except normal phone. Plugged it Billion this morning into a different power point - static on the line.

Plugged it into a different jackpoint, static on the line - but that's probably pointless, they are joined to each other.

I give up until we move - I'll buy yet another modem tomorrow too.

1149831 2010-11-03 20:41:00 Still doubt its all 4 modems failing at once, esp going by the comment in post 18
tried the ASUS modem at my sons. It was fine. Modems Ok at sons place, but not at Pcteks home --- its something else.

1149832 2010-11-03 20:42:00 What are you going to buy? If you're gonna buy one, make it a decent one, I'm sure you've read the reviews and what us PF1'ers think ;) Chilling_Silence (9)

Ah potentially, but not specifically. It could be that it's been powered off for XYZ minutes during transit to her sons house. Plugged in, used for a minute, works fine, excellent. Pack it down again, take it home, power it on again, and an hour later it dies.

Can also be due to the type of traffic being sent / received placing additional load on the CPU etc, warming the router further. Some of the Dynalink RTA1320's were notorious for that, Torrents just added to their overheating woes.

So far it's all inconclusive IMO ;)

Dunno. No-one has anything much - DSE, JB etc.
Synnex, they don't have anything I want and don't really want to wait for postage either.

Suggestions?

1149835 2010-11-04 00:24:00 Go to PBTech and get an NB6Plus4Wn, NB14Wn or even the NB8WVPN is pretty good too :) Chilling_Silence (9)
1149836 2010-11-04 00:26:00 Suggestions? Ultimate answer (www.imagef1.net.nz):D

That'll "fix it" for sure.

As Chill mentioned - 'So far it's all inconclusive IMO" to many possible reasons to nail it down to one cause.

Process of elimination I guess, if a new router does the same thing its a waste of $$.
