2010-11-03 00:23:00 | Yep, I already said I tried the ASUS modem at my sons. It was fine. My puter huh - like what? First thing that jumps into my mind (and its empty at the moment) :dogeye::waughh: "could" be a Power Supply feeding silly power, or even a MB/LAN port doing stupid things. One way to test that (LAN) - throw in another Ethernet card and use that - see what happens ???? Thats why I suggested another PC or laptop. Assuming its only starting after a certain amount of time with 4 different Modems connected, something is causing the connection/static problem to start. Its a case of finding where the problem actually is. If the connection is Ok on another PC/Laptop at your house, then it eliminates the other hardware / Modems/ Lines etc, then you know where to start looking. Dont ya just :wub intermittent problems. As I said to one customer once -- lets hope what ever it is Fu*ks up totally - at least the problem will be found then. A couple of weeks later it did when the PSU went "Poof".

2010-11-03 02:19:00 | I can see no way a fault with a pc would cause noise on the phone line, in comes after the modem after all. Rather I would suspect an enviromental cause such as a fault with the phone wiring, interference from a RF source such as cordless phone, wi-fi device, or something electronic in the vicinity. Also plug in filters are inferior to the hard wired kind and are known to cause problems, having said that you have already tried replacing them so it wouldn't be my first suspect. If you have anything that may transmit interference in the general area turn it off or move it away, try and get the modem working by itself with the minimum of other devices involved and if this works start turning things back on to see what cause it. It could well be bad house wiring however - maybe try the pc on a different jackpoint temporarily

2010-11-03 02:42:00 | I can see no way a fault with a pc would cause noise on the phone line, in comes after the modem after all. I got a customers PC here at the moment, collected it 2 days ago, wouldn't connect to the internet, and when I plug it into the LAN it kills the whole thing -- Faulty LAN port on the PC plays hell with the Router, unplug that PC and the LAN fires back up - so anything is possible. Put in a New Separate Ethernet card and sweet as. EDITED: thats why I suggested changing PC's just to eliminate it.

2010-11-03 03:01:00 | I have recently had trouble with my BB over phone line modem tripping off so often that it was unusable. Also had low mains voltage, flickering lights and radio noise. The trouble was traced to the junction box where the power authority line connects to the line into my house. [the lines are underground here] There are large fuses there, one was badly burned, it was replaced and problems vanished. This is a job for the power authority, do not try to do it your self. Get your mains voltage checked, it should be about 235 plus or minus a few volts. I hope this is of some help as I know from recent experience how frustrating these problems can be. | IanS (924) | |
2010-11-03 04:35:00 | Just re what I wrote in #24 -- just took the PC back - still wouldn't connect at their place, put in a loan router I carry with me and that works fine. So dont know if it was the PC taking out their Router, or the other way around. | wainuitech (129) | |
2010-11-03 06:18:00 | Think I might wait till Saturday. Came home, modem dropped connection, fired it back, on - off -on. PLugged in the billion. On. Half way through an email - off, but then it recovered again. Bollocks.

2010-11-03 06:26:00 | I've got a spare brand new Linksys AM300 that you can test with somewhere, I'll try and dig it out, test it at my place first, give it a real hammering to make sure it ain't about to die, then pass it on to you to try with if you want? When's moving-day? OK, if it still does it at the other end., I'll be all moved by Sunday. Moving day is Saturday. Thanks.

2010-11-03 07:11:00 | OK pig of a thing. Husband read this thread and said rubbish. He said he checked it back to the line and its got nothing on it except 50v DC. So he said it must be my cables or something. Swapped them - nope, didn't help. Plugged in yea old trusty Billion - no static, so we are just arguing and I'm saying whatever it is kills my modems, then I come back in the billion has lost DSL. It (whatever modem) always loses DSL, PPP or both. It doesn't lost LAN and I can talk to the modem and run diagnostics which says theres no DSL. NO static yet but hey I haven't killed the billion yet either. Damn thing, rebooted the billion and I am here typing this. For how ,long who knows. In fact what happens is it drops connection first for a few days, then the static arrives. I think the static is when the modems died. Our phone comes in via a line off a pole, not the usual under the ground type. But husband reckons its clear.
