1149943 2010-11-04 23:12:00 No grub. Does not install anything, it still boots to WinXP

What does this mean : sudo grub-install /dev/sda.

Listen, you are talking to a linux noob here. A grub to me is still a little worm I put on my fishing hook. lol

1149944 2010-11-04 23:22:00 Boot the live CD again, and then open the Terminal program.

Type into it exactly "sudo grub-install /dev/sda" and then press enter

That should install GRUB (GRand Unified Bootloader) onto your hard drive properly and then allow you to boot your installation of Ubuntu

1149945 2010-11-05 00:09:00 Thanks for that. I hope the b*st*rd will boot next time - it took me yonks to get it to "install" to the c:drive. I should probably install Ubuntu first (because I deleted it after the last failure?)

No. When you typed 'sudo grub-install /dev/sda' at the terminal, what messages did you get?

1149948 2010-11-05 09:03:00 I'd try easyBCD (from neosmart) its free. just add an entry for linux/ubuntu and it will install GRUB to the MBR is that has not been done allready.

Doesn't sound right to me. All EasyBCD does is provide a front end and you still have to chain load to GRUB. Normally the first stage of GRUB is in the MBR. If you use EasyBCD or any other boot loader in the MBR, you must install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR so the system can chain load.

1149950 2010-11-06 03:18:00 Boot the live CD again...

Never typed anything because it never booted....What has changed?

If you were unable to boot from the CD drive, what was the error?

That's fine - I was replying to the Error Guy.

You need to boot back to the live CD and issue the command in Applications->Accessories->terminal.

1149952 2010-11-07 18:16:00 No error, just a black screen and no boot. The CD are being accessed but the reading stops and I sit with a black screen. I left it booting for loooong times (thinking it will eventually go one way or the other) but no, nothing.

Wonder if I should not try that EasyBCD
