879481 2010-04-24 05:16:00 As I understand it, Benmore Hydro operates on frequency control, meaning that it ramps load up and down so as to maintain a constant frequency in the grid. You need a large hydro for this so that it can accommodate large rises and falls in load. TideMan (4279)

Different power stations take turns at being the "frequency keeper" - it's not always Benmore. Generators bid, and Transpower selects the lowest cost option.

879483 2010-04-24 05:32:00 Lowest cost option again, no wonder I sleep in sometimes. $2 shop clock setting the mains frequency, so my alarm clock drags it's heels. R2x1 (4628)
