1149360 2010-11-01 07:09:00 I brought a IBM Thinkcentre 8183.
It has a IDE hard drive and CD Rom. They are both on the same IDE cable.
There are two SATA connections. It is suggested that a SATA connected hard drive is a lot quicker.
I brought a used 200GB SATA hard drive to replace the IDE one.
I plugged in the hard drive using a SATA cable etc but got the blue screen of death when I started up the computer. I forgot to note down the error code.
I used a PowerMax floppy and that can see the SATA hard drive.
I disconnected the IDE hard drive and started the computer with only the SAT hard drive connected. The IBM splash screen would start and the computer would go to sleep and continually go through this sequence.
Are the SATA drivers missing? I am using XP Professional SP3.
Is the hard drive too big at 200GB?
Are suggestions or assistance would be appreciated.

1149361 2010-11-01 07:27:00 Did you reinstall XP on the SATA?

Was ACHI enabled or disabled in the BIOS?

If it was enabled, and you cant install XP, it needs the SATA drivers before you install XP .

If you installed XP (and AHCI wasnt enabled) in the BIOS . And XP installed fine . If you enabled AHCI in the BIOS after, it'll crash

1149363 2010-11-02 06:26:00 I had a look in the system setup and can't find any reference to SATA in this area.

I had a look in device manager and there are no SATA drivers. I am having difficulty finding them on the net. The IBM computer is a model S50 or 8183.

Any suggestion where I could locate the correct driver?

Thanks

Thanks for your help.

There are no SATA drivers listed. Should I search under the Intel chipset number and see what comes up?

1149366 2010-11-02 20:00:00 If you know what they are (ICHR9M or 9 or 10 or whatever), look on the Intel site Speedy Gonzales (78)

Thanks for your assistance and support. Appreciated.

I found an area in the computer setup that I didn't know I could get into regarding setup. I'm not sure what I did, but the SATA drive can now be seen by the computer and all the drivers loaded automatically.
