I thought it was a very interesting take, and also quite a good idea at that!

I read that with interest but as usual it's unworkable.

For some strange reason I was under the impression that people ( read users ) were connected to the network ( Intranet ) or ( Internet ) to do work, for which they are paid and is a benefit to the Company as a whole and thus the Shareholders or Owners of said Company.

Yes. I know that's a naive attitude but comes under the heading of ethics. Theft of time by employees may even exceed the cost of all other thefts. I have no figures to back that up but it is my suspicion.

880156 2010-04-26 10:46:00 For a start my organisation (and many others) doesn't have a big issues with Spam, spyware or viruses due to good proxy/firewall and security update management.

Creating a so called second unmonitored Ipad network is not desirable, how does the business keep track of lost productivity due to abusing internet access?. So users can sit on facebook apps 8 hrs a day and get away with it....... wonderful!! lol

Sounds great for a small friendly office where the boss is happy with wasted time, but very short sighted for the corporate world where the CEO (not IT) really doesn't want hundreds or thousands of staff causing millions of dollars in lost productivity "surfing the net".

880157 2010-04-26 10:58:00 Yeah, setting up an iPad network is basically telling your staff that it's ok to stop work and browse the net whenever you feel like it. pine-o-cleen (2955)
880158 2010-04-26 12:15:00 All I know is that at EDS they had a *huge* issue with that kind of thing, those who had internet would abuse it semi-regularly but they couldn't always remove access because they required it for their job doing IT Support. Those who didn't need it didn't have it, but then the likes of the lunch room computers never fully functioned on the separate connection they tried setting up.

I just know that I've got a customer who's an outbound call center. They need access to two websites and that's it. In their lunch break, staff are allowed to browse the 'net, but only during their break times. Anything else and they get disciplined.

It'd be ideal in both situations...

880159 2010-04-26 12:40:00 Disciplined how? The last contract I signed theft of time were grounds for dismissal after the usual crap warnings etc.

Theft of time is still theft anyway.

There is many a justification or excuse for this but if I was paying a worker to work then I would expect and demand that the worker actually worked for the hours *I* was paying him/her.

This would not mean that the worker could not get time off for important family stuff but surfing the net is not part of that unless the person could show it as research which would benefit the employer.

880162 2010-04-27 07:13:00 Also, there are soooo many business PC's that have internet access, that have no need for it. Why does a receptionist need internet access? No need. pine-o-cleen (2955)
