1151033 2010-11-08 00:10:00 Do I need to have a firewall (e.g. Comodo) along with Microsoft Security Essentials (on Win7)? I thought MSE was both an antivirus and firewall program, but the Wikipedia article has MSE as only an antivirus / anti malware. Strommer (42)
1151034 2010-11-08 00:12:00 MSSE is only antivirus/antimalware, but Windows 7 has it's own firewall. Personally I prefer something a bit more customizable like Comodo, but the Win7 one does it's job reasonably. inphinity (7274)
1151035 2010-11-08 00:23:00 I just use the windows one + the one in my router gary67 (56)

Thanks for the reply.
I thought Win7 did have it's own firewall but could not find it in the Control Panel or Programs folder - guess I did not look hard enough

To be honest it's just as easy to turn it off and rely on your routers NAT as "sufficient" protection for most people.

1151038 2010-11-11 04:01:00 I have always used Comodo in the past, but now with W7 and its 2 way firewall its not required and less hassle, especially if plugged into a modern router. mzee (3324)

MSE = malwares and other pests.

W7 got its own firewall and its pretty much customizable but not for average users. Its not that user friendly.

BTW, Windows 7 has its firewall on even with MSE so there would be no worries about MSE disabling it. Also, Windows defender (if you have one) will be disabled upon installing MSE.

I personally prefer the built in firewall since it consumes lesser resources. But if you aim for a better security, other firewalls like comodo could help.

1151040 2010-11-14 19:39:00 MSSE used to re-enabled the Windows Firewall on install / first-run. Not sure if it still does.

There's nothing wrong with the Win7 firewall, it's either "Allow" or "Deny", with the option of specifying which location you want it allowed or denied at. Most users choose Home for their Home network (Which it is by default) so very little can go wrong unless you're out at a public wifi hotspot and told Win7 that you're at a "Work" or "Public" place ;)

Dead simple :)
