1150997 2010-11-07 23:03:00 It's an i5, which I've heard has on die graphics. My laptop retail specs didnt mention any dedicated video ram, but i ran some testing software which said i had 128mb dedicated. (upto 1755mb shared) does this mean i can upgrade it? or can i only upgrade the cpu?

It's an Acer 5741, i5 430m, "intel HD graphics"
I can pull it apart to check, but it will take me a few hours :)

1150998 2010-11-07 23:18:00 You can't really upgrade it, no. inphinity (7274)
1150999 2010-11-07 23:55:00 notebook cpus and graphics are generally not upgradable. But if you have an expresscard slot, you can get pci-e to express card adaptors and use desktop graphics cards with your notebook. utopian201 (6245)
1151000 2010-11-08 00:11:00 But if you have an expresscard slot, you can get pci-e to express card adaptors and use desktop graphics cards with your notebook.

Be aware that the ExpressCard standard currently has a maximum throughput of 2.5Gbps, compared to your typical PCI-E x16 slot on a desktop motherboard that can manage 64Gbps.

1151001 2010-11-08 00:25:00 yes thats true, the expresscard slot only gives a 1x link (or 1x 2.0 link if your notebook has that), but if you use an nvidia card with optimus drivers, you get almost full speed because the optimus drivers have some tweaks to make better use of the pci-e bandwidth.

One thing I am interested in is if the optimus drivers can be hacked to allow for the same performance increase on desktops, to make better use of x16 bandwidth.

There is a community around this at the notebook review forums, or google diy vidock
