1151873 2010-11-10 16:43:00 Hello, I recently bought a new PC, it's 6 months old, very good condition, no problems with it whatsoever.

Only thing is that in the past 2 weeks my video card has been making very very strange noises and is sometimes sounding like the cooler is struggling to make a full spin. Generally though it makes a vibrating sound, that goes away once i stop the fan and even if i try pushing it back in a little or elevating the wire so it won't touch the rotor, it still comes back.

Does this mean the fan is busted or do i just need to oil it a little? Which would be a problem because it's still under warranty.

1151874 2010-11-10 18:53:00 The actual fan could be starting to fail. If its still in warranty get it replaced. Fiddling about putting oil in will only void its warranty. It may quieten it for a short while but the noise will return.

Just make sure nothing is able to touch the blades ( wires etc)

All fans make noise to some degree, but vibrating is caused by out of balance blades, or the bearing failing / wearing out.

Its not full of dust and dirt is it ? -- If so clean it.

1151875 2010-11-11 03:02:00 you could check to make sure the heatsink hasn't accumualted excess dust or fluff making the fan work harder, also we are coming into warmer temperatures which can have an effect.

If you're sure it's the fan making the noise it may be worth talking to your supplier about it, noisy fans often relate to worn bearings which is never good.

On a side note my XFX GTX 260 has made weird noises under load since the day I got it, and is still going strong almost 2 years later despite my continuing suspicion it's trying to explode.

edit, just reread Wainui's post - ignore me just repeating what he already said basically
