1151899 2010-11-10 08:26:00 Hey!

I'm wondering if an application exists which you can install on any flash drive, memory card... which will send an email as soon as plugged into a PC with the external IP address of the site where it is plugged in.

Had a quick look around but cannot find anything. Thinking about it, it shouldn't be too hard to make, the only problem might be the smtp server.

Thanks for any help :)

1151900 2010-11-10 08:50:00 Well you would need an autoplay, and for that you would need to make it initialise a virtual cd rom drive when plugged in (making the computer think that the device is, in fact, a hub containing a cd rom drive and an external ssd drive). Then you would need to create maybe a batch file or something to query the computer for it's ip address, then a small program to send the email.
Good luck finding a program that does all this, you may be better off writing one yourself or having a programmer write one for you.
I dont know any programming languages myself, so I can't garuntee the accuracy of this information either :)

The external IP :) Internal is irrelevant in most cases.

meh, internal ip, external hard drive, it's all the same.

1151903 2010-11-10 09:52:00 Should be pretty easy to script it, you can use blat as the smtp server (and its only 113KB), and you could probably do everything else with a cmd script and send the output + email address to blat.

You're screwed if the PC has an outbound firewall though.

1151904 2010-11-10 19:02:00 Of course, you're also screwed if autoplay is disabled - first thing I do on a new install. Allowing such an app to work [with no intervention] is a huge security hole, as far as I can see... MushHead (10626)
1151905 2010-11-10 19:27:00 A dyndns update client does exactly what you want.
You will probably need a (free) account.
As stated you will have trouble with Autoplay being disabled, and also with anti-spam measures.
Small progs sending via SMTP is what malware often does, and there will be a raft of things working against you.
If you have your own SMTP server somewhere public will definitely help.

1151906 2010-11-11 03:08:00 Yea, good point, I thought that anti-virus protection etc. would block it.

I was thinking about the whole thing as an anti-theft device. eg. Someone steals your camera, plug it in and you know where they are :)

1151907 2010-11-11 03:14:00 sounds way to open to abuse if it was possible so I doubt that it is (or should be).

Wouldn't help recover a camera etc but I'm fairly certain computer thieves have been caught in the past after connecting to the net with the stolen device...

1151908 2010-11-11 05:48:00 A request to a particular web server, that then emails you the connection info, would be much more likely to work than SMTP, but you will still be relying on the target to execute the code.
Maybe just put a 'my_secret_pr0n.lnk' on the media :)
