| 1151098 | 2010-11-08 09:09:00 | On my desktop, I have shortcuts to directories on the HDD where I have further shortcuts to subdirectories and to data analysis programs and word documents and spreadsheets etc for a number of different projects. On XP I was able to place these links wherever I wanted on the screen, and could do so in a logical order. Can't appear to do this with Win 7 -- can only group and order, and I'm not allowed to move them around. This bugs the hell out of me, and I can't believe there is no way around these constraints. I have got around this by using "order according to comments", but I still can't bung a link right at the bottom of the screen. Does anyone out there know the answer? A registry tweak? |

| 1151099 | 2010-11-08 09:15:00 | Right click the Screen - View - Make sure align to grid and auto arrange are not ticked. Also look under Sort By, make sure nothing is ticked. You can put Icons where ever you want on the screen then and they will stay put. |

And under sort by, there is name and ascending/descending (was comments too, but I just removed that to see whether I could get what you suggested). Under sort by, I can't unclick name. I need a bigger hammer. |

If they are not there - has someone fiddled with the reg by any chance ? You can move the desktop Icons anywhere you want. The folder options to arrange have changed compared to XP. |
