| 883158 | 2010-05-08 07:53:00 | The problem with renovating a single room is that it makes the rest of the house look shabby. Once you start, where does it end? :p Oh, I should add if you are just trying to tidy up the house for a sale, then keep it minimal and neutral. Even just replacing the kitchen cupboard door handles can have a big effect. |

It needs to be neat and tidy and no obvious crap bits but apart from that don't. People have their own taste and won't care or even notice if you go spending heaps and doing all sorts of stuff. For instance I had a disgusting '70s mishmash kitchen with fake wood, paisley tiles, psychedelic lino etc in one house we had. I painted everything cream, including the tiles (got special coating stuff first), left the floor and it improved it immensely without having to rip it all out and spend a fortune. Removed clutter, pet stuff, folded towels, arranged cushions, all that fluffing stuff and the house sold in 2 weeks. Had 2 buyers too, 2nd lady was massively disappointed. |

| 883161 | 2010-05-08 10:27:00 | Beetle. I have one word for you that also starts with B. Budget. As you appear to be responsible for not only yourself but also children you need to keep three things in mind. 1. The children need food, shelter, love, education and discipline. 2. You need to supply these things to the best of your ability as you are the sole caregiver I think. I might add that as you have a job that helps but you may be able to get really good advice from the likes of CAB which is free. 3. Look after yourself first health wise so you can achieve the first two. I believe you are trying but trying to change vehicles, selling house, wiring up TVs and etc may be beyond what you can do alone. I would like to help but I have to stay within MY budget as it were. |

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr  Dont even start on that  When we moved into this place 4 ( it think) years ago, we decidd to do ONE room at a time, instead of the old tried and true, half finished then start someplace else --- its sloooooooooowly getting there. Just the Hall, bathroom, Loo, our bedroom, office and laundry to do. One thing we did find, the cheap paper steamer Similar to this (www.trade1st.co.uk) - worth every penny - wasn't even that expensive - but does one hell of a job, even on painted wallpaper. :banana |

| 883164 | 2010-05-08 22:21:00 | If your selling go for the cheapest option a lick of paint, all you need to do is make it liveable as others have said new owners almost always have their own colour schemes | gary67 (56) | ||
| 883165 | 2010-05-08 22:36:00 | where to get one of those? and another question............ if the wall paper is in good nick just tired out of stuff, with the rest of the house is it better to strip it or paint over it? :D beetle We got ours from the local Mitre10 - 4 years ago, about $150.00 (I think) These ones (www.todayshealthyhome.com) ours is the 76 model ( not shown - but looks the same). If stripping off painted paper, we found it better to get a sharp knife ( Stanley knife type thing) cut chris cross patterns in the paper and steam it, then with a large scraper start scraping, may take a couple of goes, but it just peels off. Painting over old paper ?? Personally I like to take it back to bare walls, remove all the old stuff. Our porch area I'm 7/8 of the way through doing, one side I left the wallpaper as it is in very good nick - the other I removed it as it was tatty and had bubbles - the one I removed I re-plastered the wall, sanded then painted - you can see the difference if you look, the old wallpaper side doesn't look as good. Same with wallpapering - Stripping ALL the old stuff off, hate it papering over the old stuff, never looks as good. Its all in the prep (the longest time doing, but worth it) - have a good prep / Base and the rest usually looks good in the end. Old story - if doing it for yourself then you have to look at it every day. Edited: As Gary put if selling it - mind you often you can tell if its had a quick tidy up to sell. |
