1153452 2010-11-16 20:16:00 Hi there,

Just the other day i bought a gigabyte 5770 to upgrade from my old 8600gt .

After doing the obvious, removing old drivers etc, I now find it takes a good 40 seconds of blank screen before the BIOS will even attempt to post . Once the computer boots, everything runs fine, and it's great, except for the waiting around beforehand .

Specs:

P5GC-MX/1333
E4600 @ 2 . 4 stock
4GB DDR2
Gigabyte 5770
500W PSU

Any ideas as to why it takes so long to post? I figure it's the new card, but no idea why .

Also, if anyone can explain why even a meager 10MHz increase in the FSB fails on my e4600 it would be much appreciated - i thought it was time to give it a boost, maybe to 2 . 8, but it fails to post with even the smallest of overclocks .

Thanks

vip.asus.com Try updating the BIOS. What version of windows is on it?

1153454 2010-11-16 20:55:00 Thanks, but nothing in that forum that is similar to this issue, as it's kind of a non-issue, i.e. it still works fine, just takes its time, and is a bloody nuisance.

I'm at work so can't tell you the bios version, but it may be worth flashing it, i haven't upgraded the bios ever.

Running windows 7 x64.

1153455 2010-11-16 21:03:00 Also, WHAT's installed and whats plugged into the USB ports?? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1153456 2010-11-16 21:07:00 Yea, i'm aware of plugging in too many USB devices at start up, had that issue once before with an external. It's nothing like that though, everything was starting up fine until i replaced the 8600gt with the 5770.

also i stated the title incorrectly, it doesn't take longer to post, it actually takes longer to reach the bios post screen. Once i turn it on, it just sits there with a blank monitor for 30 or 40 seconds, then goes to post and starts up quickly and normally.

1153457 2010-11-16 21:09:00 Sounds like the card itself is initialising very slowly - this is often but not always related to power supply. inphinity (7274)

Thanks

This is a hardware issue, the O/S hasnt even loaded!, therefore, try flash the mainboard BIOS, check power cables and the PSU rating...the 5770 requires 450w+, however NOT all PSU are equal, your 500w may not be up to the task...
Overclocking the CPU will only increase the load on the PSU, did you lock the RAM timings?

Edit - certified PSU's for the 5770

1153460 2010-11-16 21:18:00 Thanks guys, my PSU is a hyena 500w, although i have a spare thermaltake 480W rated at 550w max, do you think i would be better off giving that a go.

and yea i guess i'll leave the overclocking until i can splash for a bigger psu. ram timings were set to auto, so no.

1153461 2010-11-16 21:19:00 I would definitely replace the PSU since its Hyena Speedy Gonzales (78)
