1152268 2010-11-12 08:33:00 Ok, so I usually get 2mb/s on my orcon FS/124kb/s plan when testing servers all over NZ. this never seemed right, since, at the most I was only 1.1km's from the exchange. Line tests showed quite bad line attenuation, consistent consistent the speeds I was getting. I put it down to the poor wiring quality it the house/street connection. something I planed to get onto over the holidays.

Today I ran a speedtest to the Auckland server (recommended by Speed test since orcon's IP's all point to Auckland.) I was much surprised to see a 6.8mb/s result! Since I live in wellington I decided to test the wellington server (theoretically is should have less latency and a similar speed) however the test capped at the usual 2mb/s, which puzzled me. I tested the Auckland server 4x as well as the wellington server, all return the same results, Auck 6mb/s Wlg 2mb/s

Whats going on there? wellington ping time is about 20ms longer than the Auckland one as well.

As far as I know no work has been done on the cabinets, a new fiber line has been laid at the bottom of the hill, but that is not for residential use (apparently its a privately owned line)

All I can say is it's just plain weird!

Stats from modem seem to have been improved, telecom must have done something to their cabinet that I haven't had word of. still doesn't explain the wellington speeds though.
