883563 2010-05-10 04:16:00 Bill will give students the right choose not to join students' associations:

www.nzherald.co.nz

I never even knew it was mandatory to join in the first place. So does everyone who goes to university have to join one and pay?
lance4k (4644)
883564 2010-05-10 04:25:00 The NZ Union of Students' Associations opposes the bill because a voluntary regime would virtually guarantee its members a plunge in membership and a dramatic fall in income.
It points to Australia, where association fee income fell 95 per cent after membership was made voluntary in 2007You dont say :rolleyes:

883565 2010-05-10 04:31:00 When I was studying I think it was compulsory for full time students, but voluntarily for part time students.

I cannot remember if SA fees could be done on the loan.
I've always paid SA fees every year ...

Err .. you don't join one. There is only one choice :D
Althou at elections you have the option of voting or even put yourself forward.

Talk about flash these days. When I was at uni, I had my Kathmandu polar fleece and a Malaysian made zip in jacket that was semi rain resistant. Took 1 or 2 taxi from the 6 or 7 years and no buses, walked everywhere. Ok, I had my $5 Ben Rumble cellphone with a $15 plan per month :p A second hand laptop bought via the (then) Evening Post newspaper's classifieds. 33.6k internet connection was supposed to be grand. I only got my first car after 15yrs of learning to drive.

883566 2010-05-10 04:36:00 its something like $500 a year at vic, but i dont seem to get anything out of it, so i'd rather have the option not to join. GameJunkie (72)

Are you thinking of the Tui Beer Club?

"VUWSA Levy

As a student at Victoria you are automatically a member of VUWSA and pay an annual membership subscription, which is set by students at a general meeting of VUWSA. This is a universally charged levy and is paid when you pay your course fees to the University.

In 2010 the VUWSA Levy (GST inclusive), as set by a General Meeting of the Association, is:

* Students studying more than 60 points – $139.20
* Students studying 60 points or less (66%) – $91.85
* Distance students (33%) – $45.90"

Yeah kids these days seem to have it so easy, even many school kids these days have a flashish cars. When I was at vic, I almost always walked everywhere, and didn't get much benefit for the student association, although I wasn't at the main campus. However I don't think it was that expensive when I was there. We however had to pay interest on our loans, even when studying.

883570 2010-05-10 06:05:00 Interest on loans - that was right. I heard people are complaining when they may get $50 added. Would they prefer the $50 or interest free :p

I know some people who went to Vic uni, bought a car park slot at the main campus, they cannot even get themselves organised, at times they come back home saying no carpark lefts or I got a ticket or I was late ....

Yes so easy indeed. Higher fees, working part-time jobs. God, a life everyone wants eh?
