1152925 2010-12-22 10:10:00 i've got Paragon Backup & Recovery™ 2010 Free Advanced installed on both the laptop and desktop.

free awell

I don't mind paying $$ but free is good!

Here is the link to Paragon. (www.paragon-software.com)

The features of the free version (www.paragon-software.com) actually look OK.

I believe Paragon products have had very good user reviews on GiveAwayoftheDay.

1152927 2010-12-22 18:14:00 User reviews (download.cnet.com) on download.cnet.com praise Casper.

I also see that there is a free 30-day trial of  Casper.

:) Paragon Backup & Recovery Free Advanced Edition 2010 also has good reviews (download.cnet.com):
"A reliable program with some great features to handle the needs of most users: fast complete backup and restore, basic partitioning, differential backups, individual file restore, cyclic backup, hard drive cloning, and good compression options."

Easeus (download.cnet.com) is another program that gets good reviews. It is free and easy to use but doesn't have incremental backup capability.

:groan: User reviews (download.cnet.com) trash Acronis. :groan:

1152928 2010-12-22 18:58:00 Hope paragon have improved the Backup & Recovery, there have been several people here that have used it and had massive fails, while it appears to backup Ok, when having to do a recovery total failure.

I've had it fail (in testing) and from memory Gary67 as well, and a couple of others.

One thing you MUST do regarding backups -- TEST THEM to make sure they have worked -- many times they appear to have worked, and its not till you really need them you find its been a total waste of time. So for people saying <insert Program> works fine -- have you actually had to use the recovery ?

One program I have put into many peoples PC's is HandyBackup (http://www.handybackup.com/) - works well. Doesn't do disk images, but for day to day backups of data its not to bad- and it does incremental.

Very very good point .

On WinXP Acronis has worked almost without fail (there was one back up that failed to work when I tested it . )

Casper does seem to be the best .
Does anyone know if Casper can be used on more than one (home) computer, or does it get restricted to one pc only?

Not only did it fail it wrecked my win7 installation and I had to reinstall windows completely, a repair install wouldn't work either so beware

Casper is licensed per computer. A separate license is required for each computer for which Casper will be used
PERSONAL-USE LICENSE
You may install and use this software on one computer system for each license acquired. Once this software has been installed and used on a computer, it may not be transferred to another computer unless the transfer occurs to a computer acquired as a replacement for that computer. For additional details, please consult the License Agreement that accompanies the software. So simple answer -- NO!

It appears that this version is not so successful .

Would the longer answer be the following?

Legally (as per the "User Agreement") Casper can be only used on one computer. However, technically it can be used on more than one computer.

I am wondering if the installed Casper program has to be authenticated via the internet?
