1152848 2010-11-15 02:47:00 Because you'll have to add permissions for whoever (and probably a password) if you dont tick it. Before they'll get access to the folder. And its easier (doesnt take forever) if you use simple file sharing. Thats if youre using XP Pro, Home doesnt have it. However, if you untick simple file sharing (you wont get permissions), unless the hdd is formatted in NTFS Speedy Gonzales (78)
1152849 2010-11-15 03:19:00 From memory XP home has Simple file sharing turned on by default - XP Pro you have the option to turn it on/off.

You can disable it in XP home with a reg Hack.

So does that mean the remote person needs to have a local account on the PC (in order for permissions to be added)?

In which case, if simple file sharing -is- used, and they change files, under whose permissions do they do the actions?

Correct I'm pretty sure thats exactly what you have to do

You dont have to use / change permissions if you use simple file sharing. Since the security tab isnt there (after you select simple file sharing). The security tab only appears if simple file sharing isnt enabled / ticked

Sorry, I meant when simple file sharing is used, which account is used to make changes to files?
Eg when simple file sharing is used, someone creates a file on a shared drive.
Then simple filesharing is turned off to enable permissions. If you right click on that newly created file, who would be the owner?

I can't test this at home since I currently only have 1 pc.

I guess the person who created the file, and the person who was logged in at the time? I just tested it in virtualPC (I created a text file the owner was me and administrator\name\admin)
