| 884476 | 2010-05-13 10:30:00 | You're in an elevator of a 10 level building. The cables snap and it falls freely to the ground. Just before the moment of impact you try to jump. What happens and what would you do if you were in that position? If I was in that position I think I'd be floating in midair for a moment before I died. I think that goes for anyone in that position as well... |

| 884479 | 2010-05-13 12:59:00 | Failsafes in lifts are rather good. For a start, any reasonably new (15 years) cable lift will use six cables. any single cable can support the full weight of the car and people inside. There's also a governor on top of the lift, that mates to a toothed track near the shaft rails, as the lift goes up and down, the governor spins, if it starts going too fast, it spreads out, and forces a brake on on all the shaft rails. Depending on the arrangement of the lift (are there any other lifts in the shaft, etc), the air can have quite a slowing effect. If it's just a single lift shaft, then the gap around the lift will be about 10cm all around. When that car goes flying down, the only real place for that air to go (unless it blows out a set of doors, which have been designed against this) is that gap, so it has to compress a lot. Overall it will slow it down noticeably. There's also a large shock absorber at the bottom of the shaft, but that does bupkis to help a falling lift. It's really only to give the car something to sit on when it's at the bottom of the shaft, so that the cables can be slackened, and replaced if need be. Even just the length it compresses when a lift sits on it normally shows how little it can really do, normally it compresses by about 25-35%. BUT IF all that failed, I'd just enjoy the fall, you're screwed. No amount of jumping will really save your ass. |
