1153029 2010-11-15 07:12:00 Should be able to take thousands of writes before failing. Paul.Cov (425)
1153030 2010-11-15 07:35:00 I had problems with a Transonic Stick that came free with a 50pk of DVD's .... had the same problem but thought it was my fault for tying to format it ... thought you should just delete what was on it rather than use format.

From memory it went to a RAW file format ... but may be wrong, it was a while ago.

There was another thread on here recently where they tested USB memory sticks and could read/write to them some astonishing number of times ... in the millions I think.

1153031 2010-11-15 18:15:00 Should be able to take thousands of writes before failing.

That's what I thought !

And I had problems deleting some files (taking ages) so that's why I decide to re-format it.

1153033 2010-11-15 21:31:00 I disagree, as far as I'm aware, if you store a dvd correctly, it should last many decades longer than a flash drive.

I doubt that. You actually tried it? No?
Flash drives are OK but they have a limited write cycle. Remember if you want it to last forever or near enough, use clay tablets. Everything else can and does fail eventually and becomes obsolete and you end up with nothing to read it with.

1153034 2010-11-15 21:45:00 You get what you pay for...there are plenty of rubbish flash drives out there!...I purchased a corsair 8gb flash voyager about 3.5 yrs ago, my daughter bend it proper when it was inserted, so you have to be careful removing it but it still works a treat!....Decided to get the 16Gb drive after that!...
As for write cycles, I doubt very much you would wear it out, but then I dont know how you use it....
If you are using to store rather than transport files, I guess it would be fine for years to come....however the golden rule of any backups is multiple copies, not just the 1....

1153035 2010-11-15 22:51:00 The good brand ones should be pretty reliable . Certainly more reliable than floppies BUT they still like to randomly die without warning . Although it is much easier to make a bootdisk on a floppy than it is on a USB flash drive .

At least with mechanical things you usually get warning signs like slow performance, different sounds etc etc . .

Even SSDs have SMART and are probably better than USB flash drives . A SSD in an external HDD enclosure may be better than a USB flash drive .

I wouldn't trust them (USB flash drives) for storage without refreshing them periodically though . I read that while almost all claim 10 year data retention most only stay true to that claim for a year or two .

But to sum up as PCTek said, everything will break, there is nothing better than a good backup plan .
