1152905 2010-11-15 20:47:00 I was very happy with Acronis on XP and still am the bootable CD allows full backups over a network. Whereas on Win7 I am using Active@ as recommended by Wainuitech and which I am finding to be great although it does have a couple of drawbacks as of yet it cannot do incremental backups on schedule (I asked them and it will be added in the future not sure when) and so far I cannot get the bootable CD to backup over a network (still working on that one) gary67 (56)

1152907 2010-11-15 21:40:00 Yes I do but just one full backup of C drive each week which overwrites the last one and then I backup folders from the data drive using Syncback. Although on one other XP machine I use true image and do one full image a month and 3 incremental images a month (one a week). The full image overwrites the previous months image as do the incremental images if I want them too gary67 (56)

It looks as though it can be done and I may be missing something in Acronis.? Pato (2463)

"so far I cannot get the bootable CD to backup over a network (still working on that one)"

Hope the following makes sense --->

The computer you are backing up to HAS to have a user name and log in password - it WONT accept blank passwords.

I'll make these up.

You must have a shared folder - lets call it "backups".

Lets say the PC user name is "gary2" With the password 123456

When you map the drive - in the Folder box you would put \\gary2\backups

Under that - there is a link saying " connect using a different user name - click that in the user name you would put gary2 with the password 123456 Click Finish, and if its logged in you will see it flash quickly.

Once logged in, disk to Image, select the drop down box - the mapped network drive.

I was just about to do a backup of a customers PC to the server, so I made a rough video showing how to do it Via the bootable CD (same as the above instructions)-- bit rough, but ever tried to hold a cam, use a KB/mouse & stay on shot  bootable CD to LAN PC (www.youtube.com)

Well there you have it thanks Wainui you have shown the missing step, it's an old machine running XP home and has no password so guess I'll be changing that, video skills are ok too just downloaded it

1152911 2010-12-17 04:59:00 The one that I use to do files/Folders that I want to select automatically is Fbackup (http://www.fbackup.com/)

Recently bought a new desktop PC running Windows 7.

So far, have been too good re doing backups (though historically have not been too bad !). Main need is to backup photos.

Have had a look at fbackup and it seems really good, especially if you want to backup at regularly scheduled times.

Tendency in the past (and probably future) is to backup to two different ways - ie (1) DVD's (2) external hard drive.

I don't leave the external hard drive attached. I don't do my backups at regularly scheduled intervals. Therefore my need is to do a backup at a time of my choosing (ie, usually after a photographic 'shoot' etc.) , by bringing the medium, DVD's or external hard drive to the PC.

To keep it simple as possible eg, copy of the photo(s), then restore, just copy the photo(s) back. Most of them nowadays are in RAW, to they do take up a lot of space. :waughh:

Previously have used Burnaware Free. Never needed to test its efficacy (which may be good [or scary] depending on how you look at it !).

What would be the best backup option for me now please ?

Your time and opinions really valued. :punk

1152912 2010-12-17 05:43:00 I have tried Acronis 2010 I think that it failed if you change the HD file size before you load the image on. Puzzled me cos Norton Ghost was fine in the early days or maybe that was less sophisticated Windows.

I use the Windows one. Thing is you cannot create multiple images b/c it overwrites the prev. You can rename it and then make another one but when you restore it the system won't pick up the images that you renamed. So you might need like 2 HDs with an image in each ...

A bit of fuss, for ordinary Joe it should suffice and it is free.

Aside, for normal backups, I use Sync Back for my data files to another drive/partition. Hardly use CDs/DVDs these days.

1152913 2010-12-17 05:48:00 Well two different types of media there I use syncback free for backing up data most is done on schedule but I have one drive that gets moved around a lot so I do that one manually. Just plug it in and run syncback as needed. I still use burnaware free for all of my burning though as I still find it to be the best free easiest to use burning program around gary67 (56)
1152914 2010-12-18 21:41:00 I have recently tried Fbackup Free and unfortunately it does not do incremental backup - you need the pay version to get that functionality. Unfortunately I do not want to make full backup every time due to the time involved in backing up all my data, but I did like the Thunderbird and Firefox plugins for Fbackup.

Any suggestions for a good free backup solution that lets you do incremental backups?

Ta!
