1152838 2010-11-15 00:18:00 Well before you do anything else, I wouldnt use WEP, change it to WPA or WPA2 if both support it. If youre going to use wireless Speedy Gonzales (78)
1152839 2010-11-15 00:25:00 Something from another forum might be usefull:

On the windows 7 machine, go to the network and sharing center. Click on the "Advanced sharing settings".

Almost towards the bottom, there should be a "File Sharing Connections" section, which is probably defaulted to the 128-bit encryption. Change it to the 40 or 56 bit encryption and your XP machine should show up.

1152840 2010-11-15 00:30:00 Dont think it matters what that option is on. Just as long as simple file sharing is ticked, the workgroups are the same and you've created a folder then shared it it should work

And file sharing / discovery is on in Win7, and password protected sharing is off. You may as well disable homegroup in Win7, since XP doesnt support it.

1152841 2010-11-15 00:33:00 XP doesn't support 128bit encryption either :p SoniKalien (792)
1152842 2010-11-15 00:36:00 Shouldnt matter it has nothing to do with sharing. I've networked XP and Win7 on Win7's default setting Speedy Gonzales (78)
1152843 2010-11-15 00:53:00 Yea I know, so have I, but I've also had similar probs in the past getting XP and 7 to co-operate. I can't remember what it was, but we got there in the end...

Anyway, won't hurt to try will it? :p

1152844 2010-11-15 00:56:00 It might :p Speedy Gonzales (78)
1152845 2010-11-15 01:15:00 Are you using XP home Or XP Pro ?

On windows 7 - what did you make the network connection ? Work or Home Or public. IF you selected Public, you will have problems, you will need to change it to Home or Work.

Also what firewall is on the XP machine ?

When you shared folders on the XP machine, did you tick Allow Network users to change my files AND you didn't select Make private did you ?

1152846 2010-11-15 01:41:00 Good grief! Finally it works! Wainuitech picked up on what I neglected to do in the file sharing setup on XP. Thanks a bundle! Johnnz (7246)
1152847 2010-11-15 02:38:00 Why can this only be done using simple file sharing? utopian201 (6245)
