1152416 2010-11-13 20:24:00 Dont believe everything you see/read. They used to say Nortons / Symantec / AVG was good too. Look what happened to that theory :p Speedy Gonzales (78)
1152417 2010-11-14 00:41:00 I would use Avast! myself Agent_24 (57)
1152418 2010-11-14 19:22:00 X2 streets ahead but not up to the same standard as Nod

It's worth going with the 30-day trial for NOD32. It's enough to convince you to buy it!!

1152419 2010-11-14 19:30:00 I would still use MSE. It has few false positives and checks files on the run. Though avast was clearly the winner on this comparative: www.av-comparatives.org

That's an interesting PDF.

I'd love to know a few other things:
1) Startup time of Internet Explorer + Firefox on a system that's running a system scan
2) Startup time of Internet Explorer + Firefox on a system that's supposed to be idling
3) Startup time of Internet Explorer + Firefox on a system that's doing its automated background scan
4) Boot times before / after

Does anybody know much about this G-Data? It blitzed the rest .. and it's interesting that NOD32 was let down by its script detection :-/

1152420 2010-11-14 19:54:00 I've used both AVG and AVAST on my two pc's for several years now but recently changed to MSE and much prefer it.

I keep an image of my install so no huge deal to fix windows if they fail anyway :) but for me the clincher is the bloatware that comes bundled with both AVG and AVAST coupled with the annual need to update when all the obvious buttons take you to the paid version and the free one is hidden in the fine print ( they both do this ).

I find myself annoyed at the number of programs that try to install toolbars etc on my system.

MSE is very unobtrusive in my experience which is a big selling point for me, that and it's free.

You can't blame them for trying to get you to get the paid version.
Like you I am sick of all the crap that they try to install. With a new install recently the Ask tool bar managed to slip through even though I always do a custom install.
Don't kid yourself that it is free. We all pay for it when we get Windows or Office.

1152422 2010-11-14 20:32:00 Foxit Reader now installs the Ask bar even though you tell it not to.

This is how I do them now -- Install foxit reader in custom Mode - run Revo uninstaller portable, remove Askbar Via advanced Options.

1152423 2010-11-14 21:17:00 Foxit free install info. Thanks wainui.
Avast 5 in its various formats [I use 64bit] is more than a virus protection item, some of the so called 'bloat' attends to other nasties. I like the frequent Avast updates but put MSE on client machines if I suspect they do not have the savvy to circumvent the Avast sales traps.
Incidentally, MSE needs SR3 for XP, otherwise it does not work. Avast is not that piccy.

1152424 2010-11-14 21:26:00 Umm no, you can install MSE on XP SP2, according to some sites (inc MS's site). But since SP2 is no longer supported, its probably better if you install SP3 Speedy Gonzales (78)

I use Comodo's Defense+ to block it from even launching the Ask installer.
