883573 2010-05-11 04:46:00 I had to join AUSA in Auckland because I wanted to hire a locker.

Other than that I'm not in any student association.....unless I'm not aware of a fact or two?

"AUSA is funded partly by the University to help bring you some of the services and then predominantly survives off money from its businesses that have been built up over the past. AUSA is the 100% owners of Shadows, bFM, Studentcard, UBS Bookshop and the main Café. Whenever you buy something from these guys you are supporting AUSA and the more you buy the cheaper we can make it for you."

The Govt held a referendum in late 90's, other Uni's must have voted to have universal membership.

That's a brilliant model - compulsory unionism sucks as as soon as you make it compulsory the unions become fat and lazy and pursue radical BS. Actualy they probably do that anyway but at least people have to choose to support the BS.

In my 5 years at Vic, I had very little to do with it, mainly because I was on another campus, and didn't even get the magazine. I do wonder about it's value these days with social media, although a lot of people who are heavily involved in it, end up getting jobs in politics or unions. I think it could be done a lot cheaper, don't even know why there is an expensive student union building when there are plenty of other areas in the uni that could and does serve the same purpose.
