1153019 2010-11-15 05:27:00 As an older (Dos head) guy I pulled out most of my hair due to floppy disks not working.

Have any of you had much experience with Memory sticks as regards reliability ?

1153020 2010-11-15 05:31:00 Never had a prob with them. You mean flash drives? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1153021 2010-11-15 05:32:00 The only worry I've had so far is the lack of drivers for these things on older (Win98) systems.
They do die, but are far and away more reliable than the dreaded old floppies, and I'd say are also more reliable than a burnt DVD as well.

I disagree, as far as I'm aware, if you store a dvd correctly, it should last many decades longer than a flash drive.

[EDIT]: In saying that, if storage conditions are less than favourable, than a flash drive would probably last longer

1153023 2010-11-15 06:23:00 1st rule -- Flash drives are easier to forget in your pocket than a DVD is and go through the washing machine :D wainuitech (129)

1153025 2010-11-15 06:28:00 I mean the USB memory sticks

The reason I ask, is that I bought one a few weeks ago to use as an important data backup.

I have reformatted and copied data to it 3 or 4 times, and now it is not writing some data and when I try to re-format it, it says that is unable to be formatted !

So what use is that ?

1153027 2010-11-15 06:33:00 what brand is it? jareemon (5207)
1153028 2010-11-15 07:03:00 Its an Emtec 4 gig its a transparent red.

Warehouse Stationary had heaps of them on special....

I thought Emtec was a reasonable brand - perhaps not.

I'm going to take it back, but I was wondering if others had had similar problems.

A stick should be able to be re-formatted and used many times imho - there are no moving parts.
