2010-05-09 21:47:00 | I only had it for a week, I find that it is cluttered. Anyone like it, gotten used to it? I haven't used Vista before. Had XP up to last week. By experience, I had a few oddballs. By default the computer would sleep or hibernate when I was downloading something after I walk away for 30mins. ASUS software sound would not turn on until I press default sound. By default it installed HomeGroup so my other networks didn't work. It seems cluttered, without the proper system/display/network properties nor computer management. When I open many windows there does not appear to have proper menu's like FILE, EDIT, TOOLS, HELP. I see that Office 2007 is like that now (for WORD at least) as well as the included Internet Explorer. My understanding is that Vista is like this as well as 2008 Server. :annoyed: Cheers.

2010-05-09 21:52:00 | It's far better than Fistard or XP, imo. Much more accessible, cleaner, faster. | inphinity (7274) | |
2010-05-09 21:55:00 | It installs Homegroup on any version of Win7. It doesnt matter what version you've installed. Networks will still work, it just doesnt work with previous versions of windows. Everything is there. You just have to get used to it / find it. | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2010-05-09 21:57:00 | I love it. It can feel a bit cluttered under a 1280*800 resolution though, I'd agree with you there. Pretty much anyone with a PC running win7 is going to be using a much higher res than that though. It's worlds better than XP, and better designed than vista. | wratterus (105) | |
2010-05-09 21:58:00 | I don't get it why they made a OS so diff, everyone who gets W7 needs a new learning curve. Why did they make the computer sleep within 30mins while downloading a file. Why make networking only with other W7. Surely not everyone have new computers, a family isn't gonna do a complete upgrade of their fleet. Mind you many non IT people out there might be calling up a PC Tech just to reconfigure their computer. Same with office. People are used to the menu's in a working environment or at a home study environment. Tools menu, file menu, format menu, windows menu. At least they have it in Excel. I have 1920x1200, things are just so diff laid out. If you shared a folder the icon doesn't change I think. Until you click on it and a new icon pops on the bottom somewhere there ..

It is an arrogant, greedy tactic born out of indifference to users; or it is a brilliant marketing tactic which after all the dust clears, is the strength of Microsoft. It is better than Vista, and quite possibly worse than XP. It is at it's best compared with ME |

2010-05-09 22:08:00 | A person needs to learn where things are - these days to many people seem to want to be spoon fed -- In other words, earlier OS's a person had to learn something, today people just expect the PC to do every thing for them. Anyway --- By default it installed HomeGroup so my other networks didn't work. That only happens on the toaster shop PC's and preinstalled Laptops. IF you are installing the OS from fresh, you are given the option to NOT use Homegroup - thats unless like many simply click next, next etc without actually looking at what they are doing. It seems cluttered, without the proper system/display/network properties nor computer management. Once again - its all there, if you go into the Control Panel, select View by ( top right) change it to icons it all appears as the older XP, Just a few different names on some - Eg: Add/Remove programs = programs and Features. When I open many windows there does not appear to have proper menu's like FILE, EDIT, TOOLS, HELP. Press the ALT key and it appears - to make it permanent Go to Control Panel/Folder Options /Views Tick " Always show menus" ( second one down) Apply and OK. This doesn't work for Office 2007 - 2010 - you need a third party App to do it. My understanding is that Vista is like this as well as 2008 Server YEP ! that's because W7 is built off of server software - example the folder sharing permissions changed in Vista & W7 similar to Server Operations. Edited: Why did they make the computer sleep within 30mins while downloading a file. XP does that to by default, its under the power settings - so no difference between OS's. If you shared a folder the icon doesn't change I think Correct -- But you can always change the Icon.

2010-05-09 22:09:00 | Change the settings under power then. If you dont like them now. I killed Speedstep and CIE in the BIOS. Because, even tho it slows the CPU down when the system is idle, I have a feeling that may have been the cause of my out of sync recordings with my tuner (with 2 channels, WHEN Win7 was installed). Which is why I'm not using Win7 at the mo. I may reinstall Win7 later, to see if this is the case. Now that I've disabled Speedstep and CIE. The other reason why I'm not using Win7 (now) is it had a solid background bug (it took longer to get into windows). However, I see this has now been fixed with KB980408 (which is good). And I see there's another prob with recording with a mic, it lags in Windows 7. I was reading about it in an MS forum the other night. A lot of people were pissed (esp musicians), that this prob was causing a lot of grief. I dont think there's a fix (besides a registry hack, you change some number to fix it). The other thing I hated about Win7 tho was that annoying 100 mb partition. On some systems, (not this one tho) it can stop the system from booting, after the first reboot (after you install it). This may / will annoy some people who may come across this prob, and have no idea WHY it stops at the post screen. And looks stupid. They may think something had died / broken. When in fact its the 100 mb partition thats screwing things up

2010-05-09 22:11:00 | @ R2x1  and I thought IE were to be not included once upon a time .. MS Word. One of the most used s/w. The fundamental for people, non IT people, office admins, students, mum and dads, older people is to; File and open, File save as, File and print preview and print. Format menu. Talk about a change. Need a 3rd party software, tell that the non IT people .... hey search the net yourself and install it .. I think some people may think that by default older windows is not supported that it is in their best interest to upgrade. Maybe MS is saying older OS just don't work well with W7 hence it is a work around required. Just yesterday I was helping a person over the net via email how to export and import Firefox and IE bookmarks and he is in his 30s and used laptops since his uni times...

IF you are installing the OS from fresh, you are given the option to NOT use Homegroup - thats unless like many simply click next, next etc without actually looking at what they are doing. I did read mine, I thought HomeGroup was the one for the typical family home networking. I thought public network was a no way and I thought trusted was maybe not ideal cos many sites we surf are not trusted ... so to speak. |
