1457587 2019-01-24 18:26:00 Not apocryphal news, not yet anyway . . . . . but I was promised that by the year 2000 that I'd have a flying car, a robot to mow the lawn and since nuclear powerr was so cheap that we'd all have free electricity .

Boy's Life and Popular Mechanics and Popular Science told us about the new world about to erupt with great fanfare as we entered the Aldous Huxley Era .

OK . . . . in truth, all of what i actually wanted was that flying car! Imagine taking off and zooming directly to where you wanted to go . . . . no stop signs, no lanes and no congestion, no cops!

Big brain meltdown that became!

Thankfully, the flying car never happened . . . . . because if one could extrapolate current, non-aeronautical driving accidents causes-effect, and just multiply it by a gazillion . . . . why . . . . dead bodies would be falling like leaves in autumn .

Then there'd be heavy engine and wing parts falling . . . . causing dismemberment and property damage above and beyond just the single impact of humans reaching terminal velocity . . . . and suddenly stopping .

1457588 2019-01-24 18:49:00 We got the flying car :D The take off was excellent, the landing not so good.

Some young idiots on the 31st December, lost it, up over a garden, taking out the letter box, over the fence, through five properties before coming to a stop.

You do realize 'the Jetsons' was just a cartoon , and not based on actual future events :)
Imagine the noise equivalent to 100,000 motor mowers(or small helis) in the air above us , if it had become reality for the average man .

Mollers flying car has been in development for as long as I can remember. A bit like NZ's Jetpack, that we put a few million into .
Anyway, hobbyists are now using oversize drone parts to do the same thing, made in the garage on the weekends. They get off the ground & fly around, but they look as dangerous as all hell .
One of those crashing onto my roof would make one hell of a dent .

and something a bit more pro built . How are you knees holding up, could be just want you wanted .

Don't be silly! I know that was too fantastic to be real..

Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea (www.google.com %2F&usg=AOvVaw3io3df2cvzNE5EfE43TOEn), OTOH, was really real.

1457594 2019-01-25 03:25:00 We do have robot lawn mowers at least, so that's something.

Flying cars are possible, just a really bad Idea.
Free electricity? did they forget about human greed when they promised you that? :p

Well . . I DO remember going to the GE Carousel Of The Future (was that the name? it mightta been "Carousel of Progress" - because: " 'Progress' is our most important product " was their motto) . . . in Disneyland c . 1963 when we moved to California and I went to their rotating display .

It cost an "E" Ticket . I think an E ticket was about 3-bux . In 1961 that was a LOT OF MONEY just to see a stoopid propaganda presentation .

The General Electric Company said that electricity would be free if they got to build all the nuclear generating stations they needed and they felt it would break even at a certain point since they didn't ever have to change the fuel rods --- NEVER!

Pardon me, but I just wrote them a check for what I used last month . At least they don't make me pre-pay the bill .

1457596 2019-01-25 05:31:00 Out of curiosity Joe, how much a month does your power cost?

Our house is 25 years old, 200 square meters (approx 2150 square feet) and I pay $35/week or $1850/year. No central heating, just a log fire which we didn't use at all last winter and a couple of oil finned heaters. Our power is mainly hydro and geothermal generated. Just SWMBO and myself.

Ken :)
