| 1457532 | 2019-01-23 02:08:00 | Climate change is hitting Greenland hard -- and it may be too late to do anything about it . The sobering assessment comes from a new study that says a warming Earth is melting Greenland's massive ice sheets much faster ( . us11 . list-manage . com/track/click?u=47c9040f6ff957a59bd88396e&id=dcd1d67504&e=d99fc7d4fa" target="_blank">cnn . us11 . list-manage . com) than previously thought . The study's lead author says we may have reached the point of no return when it comes to fighting climate change and the "only thing we can do is adapt and mitigate further global warming . " Melting ice sheets mean rising sea levels, which is especially bad news, since almost half the world's population lives in areas vulnerable to rising seas ( . us11 . list-manage . com/track/click?u=47c9040f6ff957a59bd88396e&id=1a96461330&e=d99fc7d4fa" target="_blank">cnn . us11 . list-manage . com) . |

They completely overlooked the fact that if there was a Stone Stock Fence then there must have once been Stock, which in turn would suggest there was Grass or pasture of some sort. Anyway, there is plenty of evidence to show that there was once substantial farming in Greenland and it wasnt called Greenland for no good reason. Heres part of a long story I quote: Greenland, on the other hand, was discovered in 982 A.D., when Erik the Red, the father of Leif Eriksson, landed on the southeastern part of the island. Today we can determine through the analysis of ice cores and mollusk shell data that in the period between 800 and 1300 A.D., the average temperature in Greenland was significantly higher than it is today. The Inconvenient Truth. Then dont forget that as recent as 1903 Amundsen traversed the North West Passage without an Icebreaker. Im afraid that Mother Earth will do her thing regardless of the presence of Plastic Bags. :) |

I grant you we don't treat the place well, tossing our rubbish about without a care, slaughtering other animals, concreting over etc . But even if we didn't, or weren't here at all, the planet changes . Heat, cold, land masses moving about, volcanism, asteroids . Eventually the sun goes out . Our galaxy collides with Andromeda . And so on . We're temporary, regardless of wishful thinking and fairytales by the various religious . |

| 1457535 | 2019-01-23 04:13:00 | I'm all for not harming the animals for gleeful entertainment too . I'm acceptable to the fact that this 'heating' or 'cooling' is part of a normal cycle and that in and of itself bothers me naught . However, where sea creatures are ingesting plastic bags because they look like squid or accidentally swim into plastic sheets or shards and they become part of their diet - well --- that is wrong too . For example - when I wanted to catch the biggest albacore, I'd fish with a lambskin condom . Hook it on the closed end and put some weights inside it and it gets eaten . . . . fast . The earth is very much alive and it stretches and yawns from time to time . All good . I just don't like harming those that are innocent or not being harvested for food at that time . 'Life's tough, then you die, ' according to Burt Reynolds . I guess he's gone ahead and is checking that hypothesis out for himself . Hmmm . What did I see a month or so ago?-- on TV about -- ummm . . . . I think it was toothpaste whitening particles getting into the ocean and causing a lot of digestive problems for whales --- or sumpthin' like that . Just goes to show you that we never think about the end effect of the things we do and how they react in the outdoor environment . . I'll try to remember what it was that gets into the stomachs of whales . Maybe I can pull up that mental tape tonight for my 2AM epiphany . |

What some narrow minded folk forget to take into consideration is that this may not have applied to the entire world at the same time, some scientists suggest that wasn't the case at all and that parts of northern Europe experienced an unusually warm period of time while the rest of the world not so much. More on that here: www.skepticalscience.com And there are plenty of other studies you can find on the matter. Scientists are also still trying to figure out what caused the abrupt change in temperature last time and what caused it to reverse. And therein lies one of the greater concerns, sure the earth seems to go through warmer/cooler periods but with all of the pollution man has pumped into the air and all the trees (which removed CO2 from the air) that have been chopped down - has man 'broken' his home. The earth is definitely warming at a much faster rate than has been observed in the past, and no one knows what the consequences of that might be. More on that here: www.nature.com One thing that is sure, if we have the option to not burn coal and instead use more efficient and cleaner versions of energy production (wind/solar/hydro/etc) then why not? What possible harm can come from not burning all that coal and oil? The same can be said for usage of plastic and other synthetic materials - if there is an option to use a more environmentally friendly alternative - why not? Why are some people so stubborn and stupid that they refuse to change, I guess it could be called narrow mindedness and ignorance. For a long time doctors recommended smoking as being healthy, then as the nasty side effects were observed, doctors recommended everyone quit smoking. But I'm sure there are plenty of people out there (and in this forum) who would argue that lung cancer isn't solely caused by smoking (its not, just a very high cause of), that cancers are part of our bodies 'life cycle' and that banning smoking isn't enough to get rid of lung cancer - plenty of non smokers get lung cancer too. So with that logic, bugger the doctors advice, go grab yourself a pack of durries and go to town. The sooner some of these old stubborn farts who refuse to look at scientific proof objectively and keep their heads buried in the sand kick the bucket, the better. |

| 1457538 | 2019-01-23 08:36:00 | Look at the end of the day those of us who claim that climate change is man made might be wrong . But you have 2 options: 1 - Climate change being man made is wrong . All that money invested in making the world a better place is 'wasted' boo hoo, we continue to live . 2 - Climate change being man made is correct, and we do nothing about it . We all die or have a terrible life to follow, well the old farts that keep voting against it won't, lung cancer will take care of them because they are so dumb they don't believe in science or doctors . |

A waste of time arguing with a self confessed Bozo but just for fun . Plenty of studies out there that point to the fact Greenland was probably warmer than it is today . Good that's established, so what is all the fuss about? Scientists have long known that these mini Ice Ages and warming are caused by the Earth tilting fractionally on its axis . Not a Plastic Bag to be found . Very emotive, but do you realise that Plant Life would actually like 20% more CO2 which is why they use CO2 generators in Greenhouses . Your problem with that statement is that some of these stubborn old fools have looked at the Scientific proof objectively, without the bias of Religious type Brainwashing . Are you a Mann made Bozo? :) |

| 1457541 | 2019-01-23 20:35:00 | Its easy to cherry pick www.nzherald.co.nz "That offered the first clear evidence that the vast West Antarctic Ice Sheet had collapsed between one and three million years ago, in climates that were similar to what's expected by the end of this century. More recent drilling by the International Ocean Drilling Program found that part of the much larger East Antarctic Ice Sheet collapsed as recently as 120,000 years ago. " The problem with this whole debate is the extreme attitude on both sides, stuck in dogma and refusing to rationally look at all evidence past & present . When one side resorts to name calling & lumping in the other side with holocaust deniers , the other side carefully picked the word 'deniers' ....how low can you go. When those who argue the other point of view risk their job & risk getting no research grants When scientists are caught manipulating data to suit , when extremists pull numbers out of thin air and make stuff up (both sides) ...... The truth is possibly somewhere in the middle. It wont be the disaster some claim, given the planet & life survived happily with temps more than what they are now , many times in the past. We loose some land, other land gets warm enough to use for farming . The UK used to be warmer , they used to grow crops that they cant now as its too cold . Southpark summed it up nicely :) www.youtube.com |
