1457622 2019-01-26 02:29:00 I'm a bit out of touch these days, but when I was in business I had a GST Account through the IRD website.

This was all set up going to the website "gst registration nz" You filled in all your details and set-up an account. you could do all your GST stuff online. I imagine they work the same way for any other accounts today. Incidentally all GST payments were bank transfers initiated by me.

I would be deeply suspicious of The "IRD" phoning you, and asking for your bank number, they just don't work that way.
If you do have a myIR account log in and fill out the bank account number there.

Received the above email from IRD to check our details for the upcoming changes to their dealings with taxpayers.

We get donation and tax refunds, so it's worth re-checking we have the correct details on their site.

1457624 2019-01-26 05:54:00 I rcvd a similar (Different but similar) complete with a genuine looking page.
I forwarded the whole mail to "phishing" @ IRD and sure enough, back it came "SCAM".
I would suggest that you ignore it. If genuine, IRD will repeat it soon. .

1457625 2019-01-26 08:14:00 I should have said the contact I had was by email, not phone call.

How did you access myIRD - through a link in the email you received or did you type the url into the browser yourself?

1457626 2019-01-26 09:35:00 Through a link in the email. It looked very IRD authentic. Then there was another link to MyIR opening up the correct login for that, so yes, I felt it was ok to continue.

I have also sent a webmail message to IRD asking for more info and explaining what has happened.

OK that is how you were caught. Never ever click on the link given in an email that is requesting sensitive information. Always enter the URL yourself. Decibel above is onto it. Also as Mzee has said IRD just tells you there is a message for you in MyIRD they will never put a link to click in that email.

IRD do want your bank account number if they do not already have it.

1457628 2019-01-27 00:01:00 You could copy the link's full url (right click) and paste it in word/word pad and see if it matches the actual web page url (by navigating ti it on the IRD website - assuming that page exists) it supposedly represents or directs to.

Or look for a online utility or tutorial on how to check if the email is fake or genuine. Might involve command prompts/pinging, analysis the header info, etc to assess the email's authenticity.
