1457845 2019-02-01 19:08:00 Looks like the US is starting to crack down on what's known as birth tourism .

Three people were arrested on charges of running "birth tourism" ( . us11 . list-manage . com/track/click?u=47c9040f6ff957a59bd88396e&id=fa7ec80bee&e=d99fc7d4fa" target="_blank">cnn . us11 . list-manage . com) companies that catered to Chinese clients in Southern California .

This marks the first time that federal charges have been filed over the practice .

"Birth tourists" travel to foreign countries to give birth, so their children can get the citizenship of that country .

The US confers citizenship automatically upon babies born on its soil .

Some other countries ( . us11 . list-manage . com/track/click?u=47c9040f6ff957a59bd88396e&id=9c0f8560fd&e=d99fc7d4fa" target="_blank">cnn . us11 . list-manage . com) do not grant citizenship automatically unless at least one parent is a citizen .

Children born in New Zealand (or on board a ship or aircraft registered in New Zealand) on or after 1 January 2006 will acquire New Zealand citizenship by birth only if at least one parent is a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (including Australian citizens).
