1457612 2019-01-24 23:07:00 I had a call from the IRD, wanting my bank a/c number
It wasnt a scam, he said I need to enter it online, via the MyIrd page

It seems a bit strange.
Are the IRD requesting this just for the sake of having it ? I have no tax owing, and there arnt any refunds coming to me. I have no investments , and are PAYE only

I know once they have this , they can stick their paws into it whenever they want, for whatever reason, so Im a bit reluctant
Perhaps needed for the soon to be Asset gains tax ? Or so they can easily check for undeclared income (that I dont have)

1457613 2019-01-25 01:01:00 So long as you are providing your A/C number via the My IRD page it is quite OK
It is my understanding that IRD now intends to pay any refunds directly into your account without an individual being required to fill out a return first.
There is no way they can take money out of your account without your or a court of law authorizing it first.
If they have any reason to lawfully investigate any tax payer they can look at whatever takes their fancy anyway.
They have had my account number for at least 30 years with no problems.
In fact the government has numbers for anyone who receives any kind of benefit. So does any business who are paid by the direct debit system.
Unless you are completely paranoid and are totally off the grid do not be concerned. :)

Ask them why they rang you then.
Tell them should you have a refund due you'll give it to them then.

1457616 2019-01-25 02:55:00 I'd tell them to get stuffed and see what happens. :D B.M. (505)
1457617 2019-01-25 02:59:00 I think they are getting set up for automatic tax returns.
Regarding the no refunds it would surprise you how many people would get a refund if they bothered to calculate it.

1457618 2019-01-25 03:15:00 Funny - I got one of those too... It seemed legitimate, so I filled out the form through MyIRD. Then overnight, I have had over $1600.00 taken off my credit card account.

So - post haste to the bank this morning. They have been very helpful, and assure me I will get my money back.

So - I'm still not sure of the legitimacy of the IRD email.

1457619 2019-01-25 03:29:00 I greatly doubt IRD would ring. They would put the request in letter form and no doubt have a special looking form for you to fill in. Bryan (147)
1457620 2019-01-25 03:33:00 I should have said the contact I had was by email, not phone call. R.M. (561)
1457621 2019-01-26 01:33:00 IRD usually sends you an email to tell you that there is a message for you in the secure mail section of your account. They will never ask you for passwords or account details by email direct to you. The same applies to your Bank. Go to your IRD account and see if there are any messages for you, if there are none send a copy of the email to the IRD. mzee (3324)
