1457434 2019-01-20 20:03:00 Hi all,

Bit of an odd request, but does anyone have an old sound card lying around they don't need?
I think the sound on my motherboard is starting to die. My left speaker was very quiet and distorted. I swapped speakers, and exactly the same issue.
I've had a quick look around online but just looking for a cheap basic internal sound card.

Happy to pay a bit for shipping etc, or pints of beer or wine if you're going through Otaki

1457435 2019-01-20 20:28:00 What kind of sound card? PCI, PCI-E ?

I think I have a couple of ancient PCI cards out in the shed, but no way to test them to know if they are any good. I'll have a look when I get home if that's any interest.
You can get el cheapo external USB sound devices off trademe or E-bay for bugger all.

Here's some links, but I can't vouch for any of these sellers, just came from a google search

1457436 2019-01-20 20:56:00 Thanks Dugimodo,

Yep, PCI-E.

But I might go for that elcheapo USB one. No big loss if it craps out after a bit. Just keeping this PC going till I can afford to get a new one. This is still running XP home lol.
No drinking is saving me about $250 a week.

Hell dude! For $250 you can buy everyone on F1 a new cheap dongle-sound card. I'll PM my mailing address.

And I don't care if it's NZ$ or US$ - that's a fair amount of cabbage for fun!

1457438 2019-01-24 09:55:00 If you swapped speakers but the same speaker is still faulty then it means the speaker is faulty not the amplifier in the sound card. zqwerty (97)

I think he already posted that he did that.

1457440 2019-01-24 21:02:00 Nope he said he swapped speakers but nothing changed that means what I said above. Assuming that you swap over just the speaker wires and don't physically move the speakers around. zqwerty (97)
1457441 2019-01-24 22:34:00 Have you eliminated all possibilities? Speakers, amplifier, cables, software settings?

Tried front panel jack instead (if it has one?) - If this is an XP-era machine, note that some motherboards around that time often had an AC'97-type front panel audio connector which either needed the front panel jacks plugged in OR jumpers plugged in to loop-back the audio signal from the sound chip output to the rear jack.

If the front panel jack became faulty, or there was some bad connection with the jumpers, etc, you could get distorted audio issues.

'K.

1457443 2019-01-26 03:36:00 Both speakers work perfectly with the USB soundcard. They're Logitech 2.1 and 5.1 speakers, no option of just swapping wires around, so I guess it's the soundcard on the motherboard that's stuffed. No biggie. the_bogan (9949)
