1487375 2022-07-15 07:27:00 I showed an email to SWMBO this afternoon. It was a very legitimate looking email, complete with all the graphics about our car rego being due for payment. I passed my tablet to her and asked if she could pay it as I didn't have enough in my account. "No problem" sez she and looked at it and said for me to forward it to her and she would sort it out. I then asked her if she could check and tell me if she was worried that it might be spam. Nope, looks pretty genuine she said. I asked her to take a real close look again to see if it was spam. No, looks pretty good she says.

Then I asked her who sent the email? ....... "I don't know" sez she. It's maryjohn14@xtra.**.** said I, don't you think that's a bit strange, coming from a govt. department?

I have tried many times to show her what to look for but I think it goes in one ear and out the other. :(. As I am 5 years older than her and not in the best of health, I try to prepare her for looking after everything when I cark it ;)

Hopeless!!

1487377 2022-07-15 08:48:00 You have to be so careful these days, We got a few of those even more deceiving, when looking at where it came from even had the legitimate address (govt Department) The ONLY real thing that gave it away was the fact I know for a fact when our car rego's are actually due, you don't get reminders 5 moths beforehand. When looking a bit deeper under the covers, clicking on the link to renew was defiantly a govt address. wainuitech (129)

1487379 2022-07-15 22:12:00 I would have thought that you would know when your car rego was due and would recognise that it was a scam. But then, of course, if there is any doubt, look, as you have done, at the sender and if it does not have a govt address and your rego is not due, then what other conclusion could you come to?

We know when our rego is due. SWMBO is very good about things such as that. But if we are not certain, it only takes five minutes to go out to the car and check. So we know that sort of scam when we see it. It's not all that difficult.:)

1487380 2022-07-16 00:54:00 My SWMBO doesn't even know hot to put petrol in the car. Never cleaned it. Ask her if she knows how a car works and she says " of course I do. I'm not dumb! You push that thing on the right and it goes brrmm, then the thing beside it slows it down"

I taught her to drive 60 years ago ...... Should have taught her all the other thing motorcar as well! ;)

Full of knowledge my SWMBO:):):)

1487381 2022-07-16 01:14:00 they get cunning.
like the IRD scams that they send only at the right time of year when your expecting it.
they can use public data bases to check when car rego is due etc.

of course simple way to avoid it is to not use the email link but ignore it and go to the govt/banks/etc own website first.

1487382 2022-07-16 01:16:00 Now, now, behave yourself. Can you sew, cook, wash the floor, make the bed etc? Of course you can but carry on like this and you could be in big trouble. From one who knows! Bryan (147)

1487384 2022-07-16 01:31:00 It's maryjohn14@xtra.**.**

There is an article on STuff today about scams. Show her.

It pisses me off they rave on about "hackers" and "clever or sophisticated".
It's none of things.
It's plain carelessness.

For one thing, is your rego even due? They send bits of paper in the post anyway, not emails.
And yes, no-one looks at return addresses.

No-one sees an email saying our bank account has changed pay here: And checks.

I did have one actually from our bin people once. Email was all correct, right address and so on so: I rang them and asked. It was legit.
Rule 1: Trust nothing until proven otherwise.
