1487744 2022-08-12 08:22:00 Nah it's our wooden tents we live in.

When we had a woodburner it was no problem.
That and ducting is the way to go......well if you can afford it.

Not keen on air tight, that's when you get moisture.

Our old villa down South had ceiling insulation, not underfloor, and wooden floorboards in parts.

It was great. Best house ever. Windows no doubt leaked a bit (as in air, not moisture) and floor....and we never had wet windows or mould anywhere.
Toasty warm with the fire...too warm sometimes.

Brothers and mums friend they visit...she has a woodburner and ducting, she walks around in thin summer clothes, he arrives in bundled up woolies, layers, and is hot in no time. It's a '50s house, pretty original as far as walls, windows etc.

that house is fine because its got excessive ventilation, but also requires excessive heating. great but $$$ unless you have free wood.
ducting has its own issues, but the big advantage is heating the whole home, something most kiwis don't do.

the real problem is people have air tight houses and don't ventilate them. tighter it is the more critical it is to run correct ventilation.
the good side is that proper air tight houses can use efficient ventilation so they can have more ventilation with less heat loss.
however its difficult to get air tight house without intentionally building it that way.
i dare say most of the problems is simply because its not ventilated properly, which happens to all homes.

1487745 2022-08-12 09:41:00 Our house is 27yrs old. Insulated walls, double insulated ceiling, not double glazed windows unfortunately. Log fire at top end of house heats all through. Built for the sun so our heating bills are minimal. We feel we are lucky.

Moving into new retirement village when our Villa is finished, should be early December. Has heat pump in centre of building. We will be interested in what it costs to heat next winter.

Ken ;)

do you mean ducted heat pump or just one in the lounge?

if its built to current code, insulation wise there is probably not that much difference from what yours is now. unfortunately the new insulation standards have been pushed back 6 months.
