Ken

6 gallons for 240pence = 40 pence or 3.3333. As you have stated, 3 shillings and 3 pence

Decimal point in the wrong place. lol

Don't tell anyone will you Ken, I would never live it down.

1487510 2022-07-25 07:34:00 I do recall as a personal affront when, to pay the previous Government's bills, that curmudgeon Nordmeyer's Black Budget rocketed the price of benzene to 1/-6d a gallon. This happened about three weeks after I bought my first car - a massive increase never seen before or since as a percentage. Model A coupe's driven by an impecunious schoolboy can actually exceed 30 mpg if you go slow, use the thinnest oil you can get everywhere it uses oil or grease, keep the choke turned as far to the right as you could and sill have it run, blow the tyres up to 65psi plus. (I was too light to make the pump plunger go down at 70psi. Lucky we didn't have metrics, that hand-pumped pressure if expressed in Pascals would have killed me, hardly necessary after the petrol price shock).

I was so battered by this event I went and joined the Air Force in order to get the princely wage of 0/- 4 3/4d an hour in the hand as a boy entrant. Luxury! Two Pounds 5 shillings a fortnight ($4.50) I reckoned if I ever got five pounds a week, I wouldn't call the King my uncle. ;)
PS, you can't time flies; they go too fast.

1487515 2022-07-26 23:04:00 I recall flying from Invercargill to Alexandra in midwinter 1960/60 on a SPANZ DC3 viewmaster. We were let off the plane at the "terminal" (an 8x10 hut), and then the plane turned round and sent a blast of COLD air over us! Lovely. Brucem (8688)
